Minneapolis to fork over $27M to George Floyd’s family, city reached record breaking settlement in civil case amid Chauvin jury selection

The city of Minneapolis reached a record $27 million settlement with George Floyd’s family. On Friday, city council members unanimously approved the civil suit payout after a 40 minute private meeting.
This comes as jury selection continues in the criminal trial of Derek Chauvin, the former officer charged with murder in Floyd’s death. George Floyd died in police custody in May of 2020.

According to the medical examiner, Floyd had a fatal level of fentanyl in his system at the time. His death sparked violent riots across the nation that amounted to billions in destruction.
In the meantime, in addition to the $27 million, Minneapolis is spending $36 million to secure the city during Chauvin’s trial.
