Trump admin official shot in DC, critical after carjacking spree
An Accomplished Republican Professional Shot in Vicious Carjacking Spree
An accomplished Republican professional, who previously served as the chief operating officer of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) during the Donald Trump administration, was among the victims of a brutal carjacking spree in Washington, D.C. The incident occurred on Monday night and ended with the perpetrator being killed by the police in Maryland early Tuesday morning.
Mike Gill, currently in critical condition, was shot while picking up his wife, an education lawyer, just blocks away from the White House on K Street in downtown D.C. at 5:45pm.
“We can confirm that Mike Gill was the victim of the shooting at the 900 block of K Street Northwest on Monday evening and is in critical condition. Out of respect for the family, we have nothing additional to add at this time,”
– Erica Richardson, spokesperson for the Gill family
After shooting Gill, the same man is believed to have carried out at least two carjackings and one attempted carjacking. Unfortunately, one of the victims has died, according to The Washington Post.
The police reported that the perpetrator entered the parked vehicle, shot the victim, and then fled on foot. Gill, the victim, collapsed outside the vehicle. His wife, who had been called by Gill moments before the incident, rushed to the scene and exclaimed, “Oh my God, that’s my husband.”
According to witness Yolanda Douglas, Gill’s wife ran towards him and held his hand, desperately asking, “What happened?” Unfortunately, Gill was unable to respond.
Douglas described the scene, stating that Gill was sprawled on the pavement, dressed in a shirt and sweater, with one foot still inside the car. Blood pooled around his head, and his right hand twitched as he lay there.
Approximately an hour later, the suspect attempted to carjack another vehicle on Third Street NE but was unsuccessful. He then fatally shot someone else on the street and stole that person’s car.
Police revealed that someone on K Street knew the perpetrator and assisted in identifying him. The stolen car was later found in Prince George’s County, Maryland. The suspect then carjacked a Toyota, ordered a rideshare, and subsequently carjacked that vehicle as well.
Around 2:30am, the carjacker, believed to be the same person, fired shots at a Maryland State Police cruiser while driving on D.C. 295. The Nissan used in the incident was later discovered abandoned in Prince George’s County. During the investigation of the abandoned car, a man approached the officers with a firearm and was subsequently killed by the police.
A Record of Accomplishments and Compassion
In 2016, Gill was appointed by the District of Columbia to be the Republican representative on the city’s Board of Elections. He served three terms until July 2020. Gill’s impressive political career includes being the chief operating officer of the CFTC from January 2017 to July 2019. He also held positions as the chief of staff to former CFTC Chairman Christopher Giancarlo and as the Chief Regulatory Reform Officer responsible for an agency-wide review of regulations.
Prior to his government roles, Gill worked as a lawyer at Crowell & Moring and served as a vice president of a trade association. He also contributed to political campaigns, including the Bush-Quayle presidential campaign in the 1990s. Gill held a top-secret security clearance.
The DC Council commended Gill for his compassion and bipartisan collegiality. He previously served as the executive director of the Ripon Education Fund, a nonpartisan nonprofit organization promoting cooperation between the U.S. and Europe. Gill played a significant role in shaping how Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac handle mortgages. The DC Council highlighted his achievements during his tenure at the CFTC, including the agency’s first-ever Collective Bargaining Agreement with its union, the implementation of a new pay and performance system to address pay inequities, and the establishment of a diversity-focused internship program.
Gill currently holds the position of vice president at the Housing Policy Council.
Carjackings in DC have more than doubled in 2023, reaching nearly 1,000 incidents. The crime spree in D.C. has seen various high-profile individuals becoming victims, including an FBI agent, a Democrat congressman, and multiple congressional staffers. Additionally, three individuals attempted to carjack a Secret Service vehicle that was guarding the granddaughter of President Joe Biden.
