MTG seeks vote to censure Ilhan Omar over Somalia comments
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene Announces Bid to Censure Rep. Ilhan Omar
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has made a bold move by announcing her intention to force a vote on censuring Representative Ilhan Omar (D-MN), a member of the leftist “Squad.” Greene accuses Omar, a Somali refugee turned U.S. citizen, of acting as a “foreign agent” and making “treasonous statements” in a recent speech about the U.S. government’s support for Somalia.
Not only does Greene’s resolution seek to censure Omar, but it also aims to remove her from the Committee on the Budget and the Committee on Education and the Workforce. This is not the first time Omar has faced controversy, as she was previously kicked off the Foreign Affairs Committee for comments she made about Israel.
The privileged resolution introduced by Greene requires the GOP-led House to take action within two legislative days, which will likely happen early next week.

Controversy surrounds Omar’s speech, particularly regarding the translation of her remarks from Somali to English. She was discussing a port deal between Ethiopia and the breakaway region of Somaliland. Some have called for her expulsion from Congress, while others have demanded an ethics investigation into her comments.
According to Greene’s censure resolution, Omar stated, “the U.S. Government will only do what Somalians in the U.S. tell them to do. They will do what we want and nothing else. They must follow our orders and that is how we will safeguard the interest of Somalia.” Omar also added, “For as long as I am in the U.S. Congress, Somalia will never be in danger, its waters will not be stolen by Ethiopia or others. Sleep in comfort knowing I am here to protect the interests of Somalia from inside the U.S. system.”
Omar has disputed the translation of her remarks, claiming it was completely off. She has shared a different translation of her speech published by Somalia analyst Abdirashid Hashi.
A professional translation obtained by The Daily Wire confirms that Omar views promoting the needs of Somalia as a top priority for her congressional office. She clearly stated, “As long as I am in the U.S. Congress, no one will take away the Somali sea or water. And I will not support the U.S. government in supporting other people to rob us. Rest assured that it will not happen, Minnesota. The lady that you sent to Congress knows about you, and she feels your interest like you all do.”
Censuring a member of Congress is a formal rebuke, and while it is less severe than expulsion, it has been used more frequently recently. Last year, Representatives Adam Schiff, Rashida Tlaib, and Jamaal Bowman were all censured.
Just before Greene introduced her censure resolution, Omar dismissed it as “insanity.” Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries called the resolution “frivolous” and accused it of further dividing the House.
How has Ilhan Omar’s previous controversy, such as being removed from the Foreign Affairs Committee, impacted the current debate surrounding Marjorie Taylor Greene’s resolution?
Ar once again as Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene announces her bid to censure the Minnesota congresswoman. Greene, a Republican from Georgia, accuses Omar of acting as a “foreign agent” and making “treasonous statements” in a recent speech about U.S. government support for Somalia.
The resolution introduced by Greene not only seeks to censure Omar but also aims to remove her from the Committee on the Budget and the Committee on Education and the Workforce. This is not the first time Omar has faced controversy, as she was previously removed from the Foreign Affairs Committee for comments she made about Israel.
The timing of Greene’s resolution requires the GOP-led House to take action within two legislative days, which is likely to happen early next week.
Omar, a Somali refugee turned U.S. citizen, has been a prominent figure in the progressive “Squad” and has been known for her outspoken views on issues such as immigration and social justice. She has been both admired and criticized for her strong stance on these topics.
However, Greene’s accusations against Omar have stirred up a heated debate. Some argue that it is important to hold elected officials accountable for their statements and actions, especially when it comes to matters that concern national security and foreign affairs. They argue that Greene’s resolution is a necessary step to ensure the integrity and loyalty of representatives serving in Congress.
On the other hand, opponents of Greene’s resolution argue that it is unjust and politically motivated. They claim that it unfairly targets Omar and seeks to silence her voice on important issues. Some view this move as an attempt to stifle dissent and intimidate those with differing opinions.
Regardless of one’s stance on these matters, it is clear that the debate surrounding Marjorie Taylor Greene’s resolution will continue to spark strong emotions and divisions within the political landscape. As the vote draws near, it will be interesting to see how lawmakers on both sides of the aisle respond to this latest development, and what impact it may have on the broader political discourse.
