The iconic Denny’s restaurant in Oakland, California, has sadly closed its doors for good. The closure comes as a result of increasing crime rates and safety concerns plaguing the area.
The decision to close the restaurant was made due to the safety and well-being of both the Denny’s team members and valued guests. Denny’s corporate released a statement expressing their gratitude to the community and assuring that team members who can relocate will be offered positions elsewhere.
“Denny’s has been honored to serve the Oakland community over the last 54 years. Closing a restaurant location is never an easy decision or one taken lightly. However, the safety and well-being of Denny’s team members and valued guests is our top priority. Weighing those factors, the decision has been made to close this location,” the statement said.
“Denny’s offers its heartfelt thanks to the team members and the local community for their love of the Denny’s brand; it has been a pleasure serving you. Team members who are able to relocate will be offered positions elsewhere, where available,” it continued.
The closure comes amidst a wave of crime in the area, with numerous automobile break-ins and robberies reported near Hegenbeger Road.
“I don’t want it to be where there is nowhere for us to go because people are in fear,” expressed Jahlilah Johnson, an Oakland resident. “A lot of people are moving out of state. A lot of people don’t want to visit. Don’t nobody want to come somewhere where they are going to get robbed.”
Efforts are being made by Councilwoman Treva Reid to address the concerns of local businesses and ensure their safety. Collaboration with law enforcement and regional support are crucial in finding solutions to the ongoing issues.
“I can’t be the primary leader at the table with these businesses,” Reid stated. “It’s going to take regional leadership at the table for us all to come together to figure out how we leverage every resource that we got to invest into a corridor that really fuels the economy.”
Denny’s closure follows the recent announcement of In-N-Out Burger shutting down its Oakland restaurant due to similar safety concerns. Other establishments in the area, including Black Bear Diner and Starbucks, have also closed their doors for the same reasons.
Eddie’s Liquor in Rockridge is another business struggling to stay afloat after multiple break-ins. The owner, David Shrestha, expressed his concerns about the situation and the possibility of having to close down like other businesses in Oakland.
“We try our best to be here,” Shrestha said. “We are not making that much money, and it keeps happening. Just like the other businesses that’s been closing down in Oakland, we might be another.”
Mayor Sheng Thao is taking action to combat the crime issue, claiming a 40% decrease in crime around the airport area due to increased police presence. However, more efforts and collaboration with regional and state leaders are needed to protect the city and its businesses.
“It is outrageous that criminal gangs and groups continue to harm Oakland residents and businesses. I join Oaklanders in demanding more prevention, enforcement, and accountability for the criminal groups inflicting harm upon our community,” Thao stated. “As mayor, I have prioritized this critical gateway to Oakland and surged police presence and employed technology to deter and respond to criminal behavior. The surge in public safety resources has led to a reduction in property crimes along the Hegenberger Corridor. However, more is necessary and I will be working with regional and state leaders to protect this tourist gateway into Oakland.”
