Syrian and Iraqi officials furious over US strikes

Officials⁤ Condemn US Strike on Iran-Backed Militias

Officials in Syria and Iraq have strongly criticized the United States for its recent overnight strike on⁢ several Iran-backed militias. ⁢They argue that these attacks ⁢will only worsen ⁢the already unstable situation in both countries.

Violation of Iraqi Sovereignty

“These ⁣strikes constitute a‍ violation of Iraqi sovereignty ⁢and undermine the efforts of the Iraqi⁣ government,” stated‌ Brig. Gen. Yahya Rasool, a spokesperson for Iraq’s military, ⁤on ‌Friday.

The US approved the strike⁤ on seven sites, targeting three in Iraq‌ and four in Syria. More than 125 precision munitions were used in these strikes, which were carried ⁣out ‍in retaliation for a drone attack ⁣that killed three American soldiers at a small US military post in northeast Jordan last weekend. The United States has accused the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella group of‌ Iran-backed militias, of being responsible for the attack.

Strategic Targets Hit

“The facilities that were struck included command and control⁢ operations, intelligence centers, rockets and missiles, unmanned aerial⁣ vehicle storages, and logistics and‍ munition supply chain facilities of militia groups and their IRGC⁢ sponsors who facilitated⁣ attacks against US and Coalition‍ forces,”⁢ stated CENTCOM ⁣in‌ a ⁤press release.

The retaliatory attack resulted in at least 16 deaths and 25 injuries, according to ⁢the Iraqi ⁤government. The Biden administration has ⁢warned that this‍ will not be the last ⁢of such attacks.

Despite the response, some conservatives have ⁣criticized the Biden administration for waiting too long to take action following the Sunday strike that claimed the lives of US soldiers.

Delayed Response

“The ⁢tragic‌ deaths of⁤ three ⁤US troops in Jordan, perpetrated by Iran-backed militias, demanded a clear and forceful response,” expressed House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA). “Unfortunately, the administration waited for a week and telegraphed to the world,⁤ including Iran, the nature of our ⁣response.”

However, defense officials ⁤have defended the decision, ⁢deeming the strikes a success.

Successful Strikes

“We hit exactly what we meant to hit,” ‍affirmed Lt. Gen. Douglas ‌Sims, director of‍ operations for the Joint Chiefs of Staff. “We confidently‍ struck targets⁢ that⁢ will impact⁢ their ability to conduct future strikes against Americans.”

What is the key concern raised by officials in regards to the‌ US strikes⁣ on⁣ Iran-backed militias?

Out in response to recent attacks on US and coalition personnel in Iraq. The strikes were aimed at ⁢deterring future attacks from Iran-backed ⁤militias and to protect the lives of American soldiers and⁣ their allies.

However, officials in the region argue ‍that these strikes will only exacerbate the already‌ fragile situation in Syria⁢ and Iraq. ‍The violation of Iraqi sovereignty is ⁣one of the key concerns raised by these ⁣officials.

Brig. Gen. ‍Yahya Rasool‍ emphasized that the strikes‌ undermine the‌ efforts of the Iraqi government. Iraq has been striving to ⁣regain stability and‍ sovereignty after years of conflict and⁣ intervention. ⁣The unilateral action taken by the US is seen as a‍ setback to Iraq’s efforts⁤ to establish control over⁤ its own territory and to maintain the fragile peace.

Critics argue ⁢that⁣ these strikes may lead to a cycle of retaliation and⁣ escalation. The strike‍ on⁣ Iran-backed militias will undoubtedly provoke a response from these groups, leading to further violence⁣ and instability in the region. This can potentially‍ lead to a wider conflict involving ⁤other ⁣regional actors.

Moreover, the ‌strikes come at a time when both Syria and Iraq are grappling with numerous challenges, including ⁣the fight against ⁣ISIS, the ongoing civil war in Syria, and the rebuilding ⁤efforts in both countries.⁤ The ‌focus should be on addressing these pressing issues rather than engaging in military actions that⁢ risk exacerbating the existing problems.

Furthermore, the strikes have⁤ raised ⁢concerns about the lack of international law and consensus in such actions. The US ⁢has⁣ carried out these strikes unilaterally, without seeking ⁤the approval of the United Nations or any other international body. This undermines the principles of ⁤sovereignty, non-interference, and respect‍ for international law.

It is imperative for all parties ⁣involved to exercise restraint ⁢and⁢ seek diplomatic solutions to the ongoing tensions. Dialogue ⁣and negotiations⁤ should be prioritized to ensure stability and avoid further destabilization in the region.

The international community, including regional powers and the UN, should play a⁢ role in de-escalating the situation and facilitating a peaceful resolution. Rather than resorting to military actions, ⁢diplomatic ⁤efforts and engagement should be encouraged to ⁤address the root causes of the conflicts and bring about lasting ⁤stability⁤ and peace.

In conclusion, the recent US strikes on Iran-backed militias have drawn ⁣strong criticism from officials in Syria⁤ and‍ Iraq.⁣ The ‌violation of Iraqi sovereignty and ‍the potential ⁤for escalation are major concerns raised by these officials. It‌ is ⁤crucial for all parties to prioritize diplomatic solutions and engage in dialogue to address the underlying issues and ensure lasting stability in‌ the region.
