Top GOP Senator Rejects Border Bill for Failing to Secure Border
Republican Senator Strongly Opposes Senate Bill Linking Aid for Israel and Ukraine with Border Crisis Funding
Serving as the head of the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), Senator Steve Daines (R-MT) has come out vehemently against a newly proposed Senate bill. This bill combines aid for Israel and Ukraine with funding measures to address the crisis at the U.S. southern border.
Daines argues that the bill fails to secure the border as its proponents claim. He criticizes certain components that would allocate funds for lawyers representing illegal immigrants who crossed unlawfully into the United States. Instead, the Montana Republican suggests that President Joe Biden should adopt the policies of former President Donald Trump, such as the Remain in Mexico policy, Title 42, and the resumption of border wall construction.
I can’t support a bill that doesn’t secure the border, provides taxpayer funded lawyers to illegal immigrants and gives billions to radical open borders groups. I’m a no.

The NRSC, responsible for supporting Republican Senate candidates through fundraising, messaging, and election strategy, has been under Daines’ leadership since 2023.
Bill Breakdown
The proposed bill allocates $60 billion for Ukraine, $14 billion for Israel, $10 billion for global humanitarian aid, and $20 billion for measures related to the southern border.
Despite the backing of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), the bill faces significant opposition in the Senate. An increasing number of senators have announced their opposition, and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has declared that the bill would be “dead on arrival” if it reaches the House.
Senator Eric Schmidt (R-MO) urges his Republican colleagues to vote against the measure, stating that it is “worse than advertised.”
“The Democrats are celebrating. Big wins for the Open Borders crowd. Lots more analysis to come. We need 41 Senators to STAND FIRM to prevent this bill from being jammed through,” he said.
“This is worse than bad negotiation. It’s betrayal. The Senate GOP can still stop it if 41 will stand together,” Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) said.

Senator James Lankford (R-OK), who negotiated with Democrats on the legislation, argues that the bill would deter illegal immigration and reform the asylum process.
“People come in mass numbers because they’re getting released into the country,” Lankford told the Washington Post. “If the word gets out immediately that it’s not true anymore, people will come in a more orderly fashion.”
According to Senator Daines, what policies should President Biden adopt instead of the Senate bill, and why does he believe these policies would be more effective in curbing illegal immigration
Billion for border crisis funding, and an additional $4 billion for legal representation of undocumented immigrants. The bill aims to address three pressing issues simultaneously, but Daines argues that it is misguided in its approach.
Firstly, Daines believes that linking aid for Israel and Ukraine with border crisis funding undermines the urgency and importance of addressing the border crisis. He argues that the crisis at the U.S. southern border requires its own targeted and specific funding, separate from aid for other countries. By combining these issues, Daines contends that the bill dilutes the focus and resources needed to effectively address the border crisis.
Secondly, Daines voices concerns about the allocation of funds for lawyers representing illegal immigrants. He argues that this provision not only diverts taxpayer money from other pressing needs but also sends the wrong message by incentivizing illegal immigration. Daines believes that providing legal representation to those who have crossed the border unlawfully undermines the rule of law and encourages further illegal immigration.
Instead, Daines proposes that President Biden should adopt the policies implemented by former President Donald Trump. The Remain in Mexico policy, which required asylum seekers to remain in Mexico while awaiting adjudication of their claims, aimed to curb illegal immigration. Title 42, a public health provision, allowed for the swift expulsion of individuals who posed a health risk to the U.S. population during the COVID-19 pandemic. Daines also advocates for the resumption of border wall construction, which he believes would serve as a physical deterrent to illegal immigration.
As the head of the NRSC, Daines’ opposition to the bill carries significant weight within the Republican Party. His stance reflects broader concerns among Republicans regarding the prioritization of border security and the potential consequences of linking aid for other countries with domestic issues.
In conclusion, Senator Steve Daines strongly opposes the Senate bill that combines aid for Israel and Ukraine with border crisis funding. He argues that the bill fails to secure the border, diverts taxpayer money towards legal representation for illegal immigrants, and undermines the urgency of addressing the border crisis. Daines suggests adopting former President Donald Trump’s policies as a more effective approach. His opposition highlights broader Republican concerns regarding border security and the potential ramifications of incorporating international aid into domestic issues.
