McConnell denies Border Bill
Senate Majority Leader Urges Republicans to Vote Against Border Bill
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is reportedly urging Republicans in the Senate to vote against a border bill that was unveiled in the Democrat-controlled chamber on Monday.
House critics of the bill have warned that the $118 billion package is geared toward getting President Joe Biden re-elected in a prospective 2020 rematch against former President Donald Trump while Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said that the bill “legalizes illegal immigration.”
Numerous Republican senators have already come out and voiced strong opposition the bill, leading McConnell to urge the remaining Republicans senators to block the bill.
“McConnell recommended to GOP senators behind closed doors that they BLOCK the border bill on Wednesday, per multiple sources, bc it’s clear that most Republicans are preparing to vote no — either because they oppose the bill or want more time,” said reporter Andrew Desiderio wrote on X.
“McConnell explicitly recommended a NO vote on cloture on the motion to proceed, according to several attendees,” he continued. “McConnell said the problem isn’t what Lankford negotiated, it’s that the political mood in the country has changed.”
Top House Republicans signaled shortly after the bill was unveiled that it would be dead on arrival if it made it to the lower chamber.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA), Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN), and Chairwoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY) killed the bill in a joint statement.
“House Republicans oppose the Senate immigration bill because it fails in every policy area needed to secure our border and would actually incentivize more illegal immigration,” the statement said. “Among its many flaws, the bill expands work authorizations for illegal aliens while failing to include critical asylum reforms. Even worse, its language allowing illegals to be ‘released from physical custody’ would effectively endorse the Biden ‘catch and release’ policy.”

“The so-called ‘shutdown’ authority in the bill is anything but, riddled with loopholes that grant far too much discretionary authority to Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas – who has proven he will exploit every measure possible, in defiance of the law, to keep the border open,” the statement continued. “The bill also fails to adequately stop the President’s abuse of parole authority and provides for taxpayer funds to fly and house illegal immigrants in hotels through the FEMA Shelter and Services Program.”
“America’s sovereignty is at stake,” the statement concluded. “Any consideration of this Senate bill in its current form is a waste of time. It is DEAD on arrival in the House. We encourage the U.S. Senate to reject it.”
Why do Republicans have concerns about the bill and how do they argue for stricter border security measures?
Nged.”
The border bill, titled the “Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act,” is a major part of President Biden’s agenda to address immigration issues in the United States. The bill includes provisions such as a pathway to citizenship for certain undocumented immigrants, increased border security measures, and reforms to the legal immigration system. However, Republicans have raised concerns about the bill, arguing that it goes too far in granting amnesty to illegal immigrants and does not do enough to secure the border. They argue that stricter border security measures are necessary to prevent illegal immigration and address the ongoing crisis at the southern border. McConnell’s call for Republicans to vote against the bill is seen as a way to signal the party’s opposition to the bill and to unite Republicans in their stance on immigration. By blocking the bill, Republicans can send a message to the Biden administration and Democrats that they will not support what they see as an inadequate solution to the immigration issue. The move also highlights the divisions within the Republican party on this issue. While some Republican senators have expressed support for comprehensive immigration reform, others have taken a harder line stance and prioritize border security. McConnell’s recommendation to block the bill reflects the concerns of those Republicans who believe that the bill does not address the key issues of border security and enforcement. Furthermore, the opposition to the bill is not limited to Republicans. Some Democrats have also expressed reservations about certain aspects of the bill, particularly the inclusion of legalizing undocumented immigrants without first addressing border security concerns. This bipartisan opposition could make it difficult for the bill to gain enough support to pass in the Senate. The debate over immigration reform and border security is likely to continue as lawmakers grapple with finding a solution that can gain bipartisan support. McConnell’s call to vote against the border bill is just one example of the ongoing efforts to shape and influence the outcome of this debate. As Republicans and Democrats continue to push for their respective positions, it remains to be seen what compromises and agreements can be reached to address the complex issue of immigration in the United States. In the meantime, McConnell and other Republican leaders will continue to advocate for a more robust approach to border security and immigration reform, while voicing their concerns and opposition to the current border bill. Their ultimate goal is to find a solution that protects the country’s borders, enforces immigration laws, and addresses the needs of both American citizens and undocumented immigrants in a fair and equitable manner.
