Train derailment spills hundreds of gallons of diesel fuel in Colorado

Hundreds of gallons of fuel was spilled in a train derailment in Colorado on Wednesday morning.

Two Great Western Railway locomotives “derailed off a switch. … It did not tip over but it did puncture a fuel tank and hundreds of gallons of diesel fuel spilled out,” Loveland Fire Rescue Authority said. 

Authorities worked with a hazmat remediation company to contain the fuel to prevent contamination of any waterways. No injuries were reported. 

An additional locomotive and three freight cars carrying sugar did not fall off the tracks, Battalion Chief Kevin Hessler said.

This is the second train derailment Colorado has seen in a little over a week.

Last month, an Amtrak train derailed in northeastern Colorado after colliding with a milk truck, injuring three people, including the engineer.
