Finnair announced this ‍week that they will ⁤start ‌asking passengers to voluntarily weigh themselves and their carry-on baggage before takeoff in efforts to collect aircraft cargo data.

The Finland airline said passengers’ weight information will be kept anonymous and used ‌to ⁢ optimize Finnair’s current aircraft balance calculations.

According to the airline, weighing passengers will help ensure that the plane has not exceeded the weight ⁣capacity⁤ limit.

Additionally, the company also stated it will not use customers’ personal data.

“We use the weighing data for⁢ the average calculations‌ required‌ for the safe operation of flights, and the collected data is not linked in any way to the customer’s personal ‍data,” ‍Satu Munnukka, ⁤head of Finnair’s ground ‌processes, said in a statement.

Annuka also claimed that the airline will not ask for the name or⁤ booking number of passengers who volunteer to be weighed.

European airlines use the mean passenger weight as calculated by the European Union ⁤Aviation Safety Agency, which revealed⁢ that⁤ men have an average weight of 181.22 ‍lbs while women come in at an⁤ average of 148.8 lbs.

Meanwhile, according to the latest data, 42% of the U.S. population at least 20 years or older is‌ considered‌ obese as‍ of ⁤2020. However, dating back to the 1960s, that number was just a low 10%.

Several domestic airlines including American, Hawaiian, Frontier, Spirit and United require customers who are⁤ unable to fit in a single⁤ seat to purchase another ticket.

How⁣ does weighing ⁤passengers before ⁢flights contribute to the correct distribution of weight and balance on the aircraft?

H defines the average passenger weight as 88 kilograms (194 pounds) in summer and‌ 86 kilograms (190 pounds) in⁤ winter. However, Finnair believes that using actual passenger weight data will provide more accurate results and ‍help ensure the safety of their flights.

The decision to weigh passengers before flights is not a new concept. In ‌2019, Uzbekistan Airways also implemented a ⁤similar policy, where ⁤passengers were asked to‌ step on scales ‍prior to‌ boarding. The purpose was to ensure the⁣ correct distribution of weight and balance on the aircraft. This⁣ practice‍ has been used for many years ⁢in smaller planes, where weight and balance are critical for safe takeoff and ‍landing.

While some people may feel ⁢uncomfortable with the⁣ idea of being weighed before a flight, Finnair has stressed that the process⁤ is voluntary. ⁤Passengers will ⁢have the‌ choice to participate or not. The purpose is to collect data to improve the accuracy of aircraft⁤ balance calculations, not to discriminate against individuals⁤ based on their weight.

By obtaining accurate weight‌ data, Finnair can adjust the distribution of passengers and cargo on the ⁢aircraft to ensure it does ‍not exceed ‍weight limits. This is crucial for‍ maintaining the stability and maneuverability of⁢ the plane during flight.

Furthermore, Finnair has assured passengers that their personal data will⁣ not be⁤ used or linked to the weighing data. The⁣ information collected will only be used for operational ⁢purposes and will not ⁣be shared with any ⁤third parties.

While there may be mixed⁣ opinions about⁤ the voluntary⁣ weighing of ‌passengers, it is important to recognize ⁤the ⁢potential benefits it can bring to⁢ aviation‍ safety. ⁣Accurate weight calculations are necessary for proper flight operations‌ and can contribute to⁣ a safer overall‌ travel experience.

In conclusion, Finnair’s decision to weigh passengers voluntarily before flights is aimed at collecting accurate data ⁤for aircraft balance⁢ calculations. This practice will⁤ help ensure the safety ⁢and⁤ efficiency of their flights. Passengers’ personal data will not be used‌ or⁢ linked to the weighing data, ⁤protecting their privacy. While it ⁤may be a new concept for⁢ some, it is a proactive⁣ approach to ‍enhancing aviation ⁤safety and should be ⁤seen as a positive step ⁢in the ⁤industry.
