LAS VEGAS (Reuters) – Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes clinched his third Super Bowl Most Valuable Player award on Sunday, leading the Chiefs to an exhilarating 25-22 overtime victory against the San Francisco 49ers in Las Vegas.
The three-time Super Bowl champion and two-time league MVP orchestrated a remarkable comeback in overtime, converting on fourth down and sealing the win with a three-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Mecole Hardman.
Mahomes was quick to acknowledge the contribution of his teammates in the triumph.
“What we’ve been through this year, the guys never wavered,” he said.
“I have to give glory to God, he challenged us to make us better. I’m incredibly proud of my teammates, this is an incredible achievement, it’s legendary.
The Chiefs have now secured their third Super Bowl victory in the last five seasons.
“This is just the beginning of a dynasty, we’re not finished. We have a young team, and we’re going to keep pushing forward.”
Mahomes and the Kansas City offense struggled initially, trailing 10-3 at halftime against a formidable 49ers defense.
However, they regrouped in the second half, engaging in a back-and-forth battle that led to overtime. When the 49ers settled for a field goal, it opened the door for Mahomes to work his magic.
Tight end Travis Kelce expressed unwavering confidence in Mahomes.
“I never doubted him for a second,” he said.
“At this point, I almost take it for granted. I know that no matter the score or the time left, we’re always in the game when I’m playing with him.
“That guy has something special in his right arm.”
After a season that fell below his usual standards, where he was not in the running for league MVP, the 28-year-old found his rhythm in the playoffs.
He led the Chiefs to impressive victories against the Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens, earning a spot in the Super Bowl where, just like four years ago, he broke the hearts of the 49ers.
“We battled through adversity this year, with guys staying committed to the process and believing. You never know how things will unfold,” he said.
In his short six-year career as an NFL starter, Mahomes has already built a resume that merits a place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
And he has no plans of slowing down.
“Tonight, I’ll celebrate. I’ll celebrate at the parade, and then I’ll do everything in my power to be back in this game next year,” he declared.
“We’re going for that three-peat.”
