Former Democrat Representative Tom Suozzi emerges victorious in the special election for New York’s 3rd District, replacing ousted former GOP Representative George Santos.
Suozzi (D-N.Y.), 61, triumphed over Republican opponent Mazi Pilip (R-N.Y.) on Tuesday night, further diminishing the Republican presence in the House of Representatives.
With 93% of the votes counted, Suozzi led Pilip with 53.9% to 46.1%.
“We won this race … because we addressed the issues and we found a way to bind our divisions,” Suozzi said during his victory speech to supporters.
“We know this race was fought amidst a closely divided electorate, much like our whole country. This race was centered on immigration and the economy, much like the issues all across our country,” he continued.
Additionally, Suozzi expressed that the voters were tired of bickering and criticized former President Donald Trump and his allies in Congress.
“Let’s send a message to our friends running Congress these days: Stop running around for Trump and start running the country,” he said. “It’s time to find common ground and start delivering for the people of the United States of America.”
Pilip announced that she congratulated the former Democrat representative on his victory.
“I did call my opponent. I congratulated him,” Pilip told supporters at an election night gathering. “We are fighters. Yes, we lost. But it doesn’t mean we’re going to end here.”
With Suozzi’s latest win, the Republican majority in the House fell to 219-213, putting the GOP’s control of the chamber in question.
Santos also commented on Suozzi’s victory, posting on X Tuesday night “-1.”
The winner also labeled Pilip as another version of George Santos.
“Who knows what she really stands for? She’s George Santos 2.0. It’s the exact same nontransparent, phony baloney, just trying to get votes instead of saying what you really think,” Suozzi charged on the eve of the election.
During the campaign, Suozzi distanced himself from President Joe Biden, believing that Biden’s involvement would have hindered his chances.
“The president is underwater in the district,” Suozzi told The Post last week. “I don’t think that Joe Biden campaigning for me would help me.”
Suozzi first entered the House in 2016 and was re-elected in 2020. He later gave up his seat to pursue an unsuccessful bid for Governor against Governor Kathy Hochul (D-N.Y.).

He emphasized the need to find common ground and start delivering for the people of the United States. Suozzi also criticized former President Donald Trump and his allies in Congress, urging them to stop running for Trump and start running the country.
Pilip, on the other hand, congratulated Suozzi on his victory and expressed her determination to continue fighting. Despite the loss, she remains committed to her goals.

Suozzi labeled Pilip as another version of George Santos, accusing her of being nontransparent and phony. He questioned her true intentions and beliefs, suggesting that she was only seeking votes instead of being genuine.
During the campaign, Suozzi distanced himself from President Joe Biden, believing that Biden’s involvement would have hindered his chances. He recognized that the president’s popularity in the district was low and did not see his support as beneficial.
Suozzi previously served in the House from 2016 to 2020. He gave up his seat to pursue an unsuccessful bid for Governor against Governor Kathy Hochul.
Overall, Suozzi’s victory in the special election has contributed to the diminishing Republican presence in the House of Representatives. It remains to be seen how this will impact the GOP’s control of the chamber moving forward.
