Rep. Barbara Lee passionately defended her proposal for a $50 federal minimum wage this week by highlighting the high cost of living in her state.
During a Senate debate, opponents of Representative Lee (D-Calif) from the Democratic party argued for a minimum hourly pay of $20 to $25.
“I understand the importance of worker productivity and ensuring that employees are well taken care of with a livable wage,” expressed Rep. Lee.
She further referenced a United Way report, stating that $127,000 is barely enough for a family of four to survive in the expensive San Francisco Bay Area.
Additionally, Lee provided another example, highlighting that an annual income of $104,000 would still be considered low-income in California.
“Let’s do the math. Let’s do the math,” emphasized Rep. Lee. “While a national minimum wage increase to $20 or $25 is important, I must prioritize the needs of California and consider the affordability factor when determining this wage.”
Lee, who is currently running to replace the late Democrat Senator Dianne Feinstein, received criticism from Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who humorously suggested a $500 per hour minimum wage on social media.
The current federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour, while California’s minimum wage stands at $16 per hour. A $50 hourly wage would equate to an annual income of $104,000 for a 40-hour work week.

Proposal for a $50 Federal Minimum Wage Sparks Debate
OAN’s Brooke Mallory | 6:11 PM – Wednesday, February 14, 2024
In a recent Senate debate, Representative Barbara Lee fervently defended her proposal for a $50 federal minimum wage, citing the exorbitant cost of living in her home state of California.
Opponents of Rep. Lee, who are also members of the Democratic party, argued for a minimum hourly pay of $20 to $25. However, Rep. Lee underscored the importance of worker productivity and ensuring employees are well taken care of with a livable wage.
Supporting her argument, Rep. Lee referenced a United Way report that revealed a family of four would need at least $127,000 to meet their basic living expenses in the expensive San Francisco Bay Area. She further highlighted that an annual income of $104,000 would still be considered low-income in California.
Emphasizing the need to consider the affordability factor, Rep. Lee stated, ”While a national minimum wage increase to $20 or $25 is important, I must prioritize the needs of California and take into account the cost of living when determining this wage.”
Currently running to replace the late Democrat Senator Dianne Feinstein, Rep. Lee faced criticism from Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas). In a humorous tweet, Sen. Cruz suggested a $500 per hour minimum wage.
This debate over the federal minimum wage highlights the ongoing discussion around income inequality and the struggle to provide workers with wages that can sustain them in high-cost areas. Supporters of a higher minimum wage argue that it is necessary to ensure that individuals and families can meet their basic needs and have a decent standard of living.
However, opponents of a significant increase in the federal minimum wage raise concerns about the potential negative impacts on businesses, such as job losses and increased costs. They argue that businesses may be unable to afford such high wages, resulting in reduced hiring or even closures.
While the $50 federal minimum wage proposal may seem extreme to some, it brings attention to the pressing issue of income inequality and the widening gap between wages and the cost of living. As the debate continues, lawmakers must carefully consider the potential consequences and find a balance that addresses the needs of workers without undermining economic stability.
