The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and other New York City investigators conducted a raid on the Fire Department of New York’s (FDNY) Brooklyn headquarters and the homes of two fire chiefs on Thursday morning.
According to insider sources, Brian Cordasco and Anthony Saccavino, two senior FDNY chiefs, had their homes searched by the feds as part of a corruption probe. They are being accused of accepting illegal payments.
The investigation was initiated last summer after allegations surfaced that the two chiefs were each paid $100,000 to expedite or arrange inspections, as reported by The New York Times.
Upon the arrival of federal agents, the chiefs had their phones confiscated, as stated by the New York Post.
In addition, the fourth floor of the FDNY HQ was sealed off, and investigators were in the process of retrieving records and computers.
These two FDNY chiefs were known for their loyalty to Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh, who promoted them after demoting three other chiefs, causing unrest within the department, according to sources.
“The FDNY’s first priority is always keeping New Yorkers safe, and we expect every member of the department to act appropriately. As soon as Commissioner Kavanagh was alerted to these allegations last fall, she immediately referred them to DOI to investigate them,” a spokesperson for the department said in a statement.
“Commissioner Kavanagh has proactively placed the employees at the center of this investigation on modified duty, and we are awaiting guidance from DOI regarding further action.”

As the investigation unfolds, it is essential for the authorities to maintain transparency and keep the public informed about the progress and outcomes. This open communication is crucial for rebuilding trust in the FDNY and assuring the public that measures are being taken to prevent future instances of corruption.
Ultimately, the raid on the FDNY headquarters and the homes of the two fire chiefs serves as a reminder that no one is above the law. It is a testament to the FBI and other investigative agencies’ commitment to upholding justice and preserving the integrity of public institutions. The outcome of this investigation will have far-reaching implications for the FDNY and its reputation, as well as for the broader fight against corruption in public service.
