Texas officials have been tirelessly searching for 11-year-old Audrii Cunningham, who mysteriously disappeared after failing to board her school bus. The discovery of her “Hello Kitty” backpack near a reservoir has become a crucial piece of evidence.
On Thursday morning at 7 a.m., Cunningham was last seen near her home in Polk County, Texas. Despite her absence from school and failure to board the bus, her whereabouts remain unknown, according to a statement from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
An AMBER Alert has been issued for Cunningham across Texas, and the search effort has been described as an “all-hands-on-deck investigation” by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).
The missing girl is described as a “White, standing [at] four feet and one inch tall, with blonde hair and blue eyes.” She was last seen wearing “black tennis shoes, black pants, and a black hoodie with white lettering.”
In a recent news release, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office announced the identification of a person of interest in the case of the missing 11-year-old girl. Don Steven McDougal, 42, has been taken into custody on an unrelated charge and is currently being held in jail in Polk County.
McDougal was initially detained on Friday for aggravated assault in a separate incident, but he has now been identified as one of the persons of interest in the DPS’s investigation for the Southeast Texas region.
According to investigators, the girl’s disappearance may be connected to a dark blue 2003 Chevrolet Suburban. They are urging anyone who witnessed the vehicle on Thursday or Friday to report the incident to the police.
A small backpack believed to belong to the missing girl was found near the Cunningham family’s residence at the Lake Livingston Dam, as stated in the agency’s press release.
A press conference has been scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Monday to provide additional updates on the ongoing search for the 11-year-old Texas girl.
The search for Cunningham involves a collaborative effort from several law enforcement agencies, including state troopers, Polk County deputies, San Jacinto County deputies, first responders, and the FBI.
“The focus right now is on bringing Audrii home,” said Lt. Craig Cummings. ”The family has been very cooperative. Everybody here, the entire community here, has been nothing but cooperative and helpful. Our prayers collectively are that we bring Audrii home soon.”
