Exciting News for Food Allergy Sufferers
People with severe food allergies may soon have the chance to indulge in any food they desire without the fear of severe allergic reactions.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on Friday the approval of a groundbreaking new drug called “Xolair.” This medication is designed to significantly reduce severe allergic reactions to various types of foods in both adults and children over the age of 1.
However, it’s important to note that Xolair is not intended for use during an allergic reaction. Instead, it should be administered regularly every two to four weeks to minimize the risk of future reactions over time, as reported by The Post.
“While it will not eliminate food allergies or allow patients to consume food allergens freely, its repeated use will help reduce the health impact if accidental exposure occurs,” said Kelly Stone with the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
Despite its benefits, Xolair does come with some potential side effects, including fever and the possibility of triggering anaphylaxis in certain cases.
Furthermore, the cost of the medication is quite high, with a monthly price of $2,900 for children and $5,000 for adults. However, these costs may be lower with medical insurance coverage, according to the Associated Press.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 1 in 16 adults in the United States suffer from a food allergy as of 2021. Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for food allergies.
On a positive note, Xolair has already received FDA approval for treating asthma caused by allergies, chronic hives, and chronic inflammatory sinus disease.
A study sponsored by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases found that Xolair successfully helped some participants tolerate certain foods. The study involved 168 participants, including children as young as 1 year old, who were able to consume small amounts of peanuts, milk, eggs, and cashews without experiencing an allergic reaction after receiving treatment with the new drug.
“Xolair offers patients and families an important new treatment option that can help redefine the way food allergies are managed and reduce the often-serious allergic reactions that can result from exposure to food allergens,” said Levi Garraway, M.D., Ph.D., Genentech’s chief medical officer and head of Global Product Development, in a statement.
“Today’s approval builds on 20 years of patient experience and an established efficacy and safety profile since Xolair was first approved in allergic asthma. We look forward to bringing this treatment to the food allergy community who have long awaited an advancement.”

How does the approval of Xolair provide hope to people with severe food allergies?
Severe allergic reactions,” said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
The approval of Xolair brings hope to the millions of people who suffer from severe food allergies. It provides a way for them to potentially enjoy a wider variety of foods without the constant fear of life-threatening reactions.
However, it is crucial for individuals with food allergies to remember that Xolair is not a cure. It is a treatment option that aims to mitigate the risk of severe reactions. It is still important to avoid known allergens and take precautionary measures.
In conclusion, the approval of Xolair by the FDA is a significant milestone in the treatment of food allergies. It provides hope and relief for those who have been living in constant fear of severe reactions. While it may not eliminate allergies or allow for unrestricted consumption of allergens, it offers a way to reduce the impact and potential harm of accidental exposure. This groundbreaking medication has the potential to redefine how food allergies are managed and improve the quality of life for millions of individuals and their families.
