DC council member faces recall amid rising crime rates
Business Owner in Washington, D.C. Launches Recall Effort Against Councilwoman Brianne Nadeau
A business owner in Washington, D.C., took a bold step on Tuesday by filing paperwork with the D.C. Board of Elections to recall Ward 1 Democratic Councilwoman Brianne Nadeau. This action comes as a response to the alarming surge in violent crime that the city experienced last year.
Diana Alvarez, the driving force behind the recall effort, owns the Lit City Smoke Shop in Columbia Heights, which is located in Ward 1. Alvarez revealed that her shop has fallen victim to three “violent” robberies amidst the city’s skyrocketing crime rate. According to Crime Data DC, crime in Washington, D.C. has risen by 39%, and homicides in Ward 1, which Nadeau has overseen since 2015, have doubled since 2023.
Defunding the Police and Reduced Penalties: The Catalyst for Recall
“Brianne voted to defund the police by $15 million, which has left the Metropolitan Police Department dramatically undermanned,” states the recall campaign’s website. “Last year, Brianne ignored the pleas of Mayor Muriel Bowser, the MPD, and thousands of her constituents when she passed legislation that reduced penalties on violent criminals including repeat offenders convicted of gun crimes, violent assaults, and carjackings.”
Nadeau supported the revamping of the city’s criminal code and the reduction of the police budget in 2022. This effort resulted in the unanimous approval by the council to lower statutory maximum penalties for certain violent crimes, as reported by the Washington Post.
A Call for Accountability and Change
“The dream of a safe, vibrant, and prosperous Ward 1 seems more distant with each passing day,” declares Alvarez, chairwoman of the recall committee. “I am proud to lead this effort because we deserve representation that is responsive to our needs, not in denial of them. Brianne Nadeau has fundamentally failed to take any consequential action to reduce crime. And it is time she is held accountable.”
In response to the recall campaign, Nadeau defended her actions and emphasized her efforts to combat crime in her district. She highlighted her introduction of legislation to strengthen police cadet recruitment and provide additional tools to the Metropolitan Police Department. Nadeau also expressed her commitment to addressing issues such as homelessness, mental health, substance use disorders, and youth disengagement, which are crucial in preventing crime.
While Alvarez acknowledged the support of a few residents and small businesses who are eager to see improvements in Ward 1, she clarified that her recall efforts began before the announcement of the Ward 6 recall.
It is worth noting that Nadeau is not the only D.C. council member facing a recall. Charles Allen, representing Ward 6, is also targeted for his support of defunding the police in 2020.
Obtaining Signatures for a Special Election
In order to initiate a special election for the recall, the campaign must gather signatures from 10% of registered voters in Nadeau’s district, which amounts to approximately 6,100 people. It is important to mention that the majority of voters in the district are registered Democrats, as reported by Newsweek.
The Washington Examiner has reached out to Nadeau’s office for comment.

How have the changes focused on rehabilitation and restorative justice affected crime rates in Washington, D.C.?
Washington Post. These changes aimed to focus on rehabilitation and restorative justice rather than relying solely on incarceration.
However, critics argue that this approach has led to an increase in crime rates and a sense of insecurity among residents. The recall effort argues that Nadeau’s support for these policies has directly contributed to the rise in violent crimes, including the robberies experienced by Alvarez’s smoke shop.
The recall campaign’s website further emphasizes the importance of public safety, stating, “Our city is facing a crisis, and we need strong leadership that will prioritize the safety and well-being of its residents. We cannot afford to have council members who prioritize political ideology over public safety.”
In response to the recall effort, Councilwoman Nadeau defended her decisions, arguing that the changes to the criminal code aimed to address the root causes of crime and provide alternatives to incarceration. She believes that investing in community-based programs and resources is the key to reducing crime rates in the long term.
The recall effort against Councilwoman Nadeau is significant as it highlights the growing concern among business owners and residents regarding the surge in violent crime in Washington, D.C. While some individuals support Nadeau’s progressive approach to criminal justice reform, others believe that it has come at the expense of public safety.
Ultimately, the success of the recall effort will depend on the support it garners from the residents of Ward 1. If enough signatures are gathered within the given timeframe, a recall election will be held, allowing the constituents to decide whether Councilwoman Nadeau should continue to represent them.
This recall effort serves as a reminder of the importance of public safety and the role elected officials play in addressing the needs and concerns of their constituents. As Washington, D.C. faces ongoing challenges related to crime, it is crucial for residents and business owners to actively participate in the political process and hold their elected officials accountable for their actions and decisions.
