AT&T outage disrupts US cellular services, impacting thousands
Breaking News: Cellular Phone Service Outage Hits AT&T Users in the United States
(Reuters) – In a major disruption, thousands of AT&T users in the United States experienced a cellular phone service outage on Thursday. The outage affected calls, text messages, and even emergency services in cities like San Francisco.
AT&T acknowledged the interruptions and assured customers that they were working urgently to restore service. They recommended using Wi-Fi calling as an alternative until the issue is resolved.
According to Downdetector.com, more than 73,000 incidents were reported around 8:15 a.m. ET (1315 GMT), and the outage has been ongoing for at least five hours.
AT&T, one of the leading telecom operators in the U.S., has a 5G network that covers 290 million customers nationwide.
The outage has also impacted people’s ability to reach emergency services through 911, as reported by government departments in various U.S. cities on the X social media platform.
“We are aware of an issue impacting AT&T wireless customers from making and receiving any phone calls (including to 911),” said the San Francisco Fire Department on X.
The Prince William County Police Department in Virginia and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department in North Carolina also posted similar statements on the platform.
Users of Verizon, T-Mobile, and UScellular also faced disruptions, according to Downdetector.
However, T-Mobile and Verizon clarified that their networks were operating normally and the outage may be related to customers trying to connect with other networks.
U.S. Senator Rick Scott of Florida expressed concern and reached out to AT&T for an update on the outage.
“Florida law enforcement is doing everything it can to keep people safe, and I expect AT&T to keep us informed on what it is doing to get 911 services fully back online ASAP,” he said in a post on X.
In 2021, the regulatory agency settled a probe into a T-Mobile outage during the pandemic that lasted over 12 hours and led to more than 20,000 failed 911 emergency calls for $19.5 million.
