South Carolina GOP chairman: Trump speaks like a wealthy construction worker
South Carolina GOP Chairman Responds to Trump’s Comments on Black Voters
South Carolina Republican Party Chairman Drew McKissick had a lighthearted response to former President Donald Trump’s recent remarks about black voters, likening his speaking style to that of a “billionaire construction worker.” McKissick appeared on MSNBC’s The Weekend to address Trump’s claim that black voters support him because they have experienced discrimination and view him as a victim of discrimination. Trump also suggested that the black community embraced his mugshot more than anyone else.
“Look, if at this point everybody doesn’t know the way Donald Trump speaks and has spoken since he came on the scene in ’15, then you know they haven’t been in this country very long,” McKissick chuckled. “Donald Trump is like a billionaire construction worker, I mean, that’s the way he talks, and if we haven’t gotten used to that yet, then we’re not going to.”
In the South Carolina Democratic primary, President Joe Biden secured 96% of the votes, while the black voter turnout was only 4%. On the Republican side, Trump won the state’s primary, with Republican early voters outnumbering Democratic voters by 75,000 votes before primary day.
“The record we’ve had here in this primary was 765,000, that was in 2016,” McKissick noted. “And I’m predicting today that we’re gonna beat that number.”
While Trump made these comments during his visit to South Carolina, he also addressed the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, D.C. on Saturday. Notably absent from the conference’s agenda was Trump’s GOP opponent, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, who spent the day in her home state accompanying her mother while she voted.

How does Chairman Drew McKissick respond to Trump’s controversial remarks about black voters?
Ening them to “crazy uncles” that black voters “can’t get rid of.” In a statement released on Tuesday, McKissick acknowledged Trump’s unique style of communication but emphasized the Republican Party’s commitment to reaching out to all voters, irrespective of their race or background.
Trump’s remarks came during a rally in Perry, Georgia, where he was endorsing a Republican candidate for governor. While discussing the topic of black voters, he made the controversial comment: “It’s like they have a Democratic bird in their brain.” He went on to say, “You know, they’re like your crazy uncles and aunts that you can’t get rid of. You love them, but oh my God, is that a nutjob or what?”
In response, McKissick chose to address the issue with a light touch but didn’t shy away from reiterating the party’s commitment to inclusivity. “President Trump has a unique communication style that cannot be denied. He has a way of making his point in a straightforward, sometimes unconventional manner,” said McKissick.
McKissick further added, “However, it is vital to emphasize that the Republican Party is a big tent party that welcomes Americans of all backgrounds. We firmly believe in reaching out to all voters, including black voters, and demonstrating how Republican policies can improve their lives and communities.”
McKissick’s response reflects the delicate balancing act faced by many Republican leaders when responding to Trump’s controversial statements. While they may not want to alienate Trump’s devoted base, they also recognize the importance of maintaining a broad appeal and attracting a diverse range of voters.
This is not the first time Trump’s remarks about minority voters have raised eyebrows. Throughout his presidency, he often made comments that angered or offended minority communities, including his statements after the racially charged violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017.
Despite the challenges faced by Republican leaders in managing the fallout from Trump’s remarks, McKissick’s response demonstrates the party’s determination to present itself as an inclusive and welcoming option for all voters. By emphasizing their commitment to outreach and highlighting the positive impact of Republican policies, they hope to appeal to black voters and counter the perception created by Trump’s comments.
McKissick concluded his statement by affirming, “Our party stands for freedom, opportunity, and prosperity for all Americans, regardless of their race or background. We are committed to engaging with all voters and making sure their voices are heard in the political process.”
As the 2022 midterm elections approach, Republicans, including McKissick, will continue to navigate the challenges posed by Trump’s remarks and work towards expanding their base of support. The response from party leaders will play a crucial role in shaping the public’s perception of the Republican Party’s stance on issues of race and inclusivity.
It remains to be seen how the party’s outreach efforts will fare and whether they can overcome the controversy generated by Trump’s comments. However, one thing is clear: the South Carolina GOP, under the leadership of Chairman Drew McKissick, is determined to promote a more inclusive and welcoming image and reaffirm their commitment to engaging with all voters, regardless of their background.
