SC voters prefer Trump over Haley in terms of physical and mental fitness
Trump Declared More Physically and Mentally Fit than Haley by South Carolina GOP Voters
In a stunning display of support, Republican primary voters in South Carolina have overwhelmingly declared former President Donald Trump, 77, as the more physically and mentally fit candidate for the presidency compared to former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, 52.
After securing victories in the Iowa caucuses, New Hampshire primary, and Nevada caucuses, Trump’s triumph in South Carolina came as no surprise. With 60% of the vote counted, he was declared the winner immediately after polls closed at 7 p.m., leading Haley by a significant margin of 39%.
Exit polls conducted by CBS News, ABC News, NBC News, and the Washington Post shed light on the coalitions backing both candidates, revealing both expected and unexpected results.
Physical and Mental Health Take Center Stage
As the 2024 election approaches, physical and mental health have emerged as crucial topics, especially considering the ages of the likely Democratic and Republican candidates, 81 and 77, respectively. President Joe Biden’s age, in particular, has faced intense scrutiny.
Despite Haley’s 25-year age advantage over Trump, South Carolina GOP primary voters expressed greater confidence in Trump’s physical and mental fitness. According to CBS News’s exit polls, a staggering 72% believed Trump possessed the necessary health in both aspects to serve as president, with only 27% disagreeing. In contrast, Haley fell short, with only 60% of voters believing she had the physical and mental faculties to be commander in chief.
ABC News reported that 71% of voters deemed Trump’s physical and mental health satisfactory for a president, while only 59% said the same of Haley.
Part of Haley’s campaign centered around the need for a new generation of leadership, highlighting the age disparity between herself and many lawmakers, as well as the two most popular presidential candidates. She even advocated for mandatory mental competency tests for politicians over the age of 75.
However, despite her argument, Lewis Tabb, 74, of Beaufort, South Carolina, remarked that Haley was “the only person of the three left that could speak in complete sentences,” drawing a comparison between her, Biden, and Trump.
Strong Demographic Support for Trump
Trump’s strongest support came from demographic groups identifying as “very conservative,” white evangelical Christians, voters without college degrees, and self-proclaimed Republicans.
Rusty Howe, 60, of Hanahan, South Carolina, explained that he voted for Trump “because that’s what Christians want.”
Haley, on the other hand, garnered support from independents, centrists, and Democrats, as revealed by exit polls. NBC News reported that Haley won over independents with 54% of the vote, compared to Trump’s 43%. She also triumphed among “moderates,” securing 67% of the vote against Trump’s 32%.
However, even Gregory Mooshagian, a 64-year-old independent who supported Haley, admitted that he did not expect her to emerge victorious in South Carolina. He believed that Trump’s rhetoric would ultimately secure him the win.
While Haley found favor among voters who prioritized abortion as their top concern, receiving 51% support, the most pressing issues for South Carolina GOP voters were immigration and the economy, where Trump outperformed Haley.

Despite her loss in her home state, Haley remains determined to stay in the race, asserting that voters desire an alternative to Biden and Trump.
How did South Carolina GOP primary voters perceive Donald Trump’s physical and mental fitness compared to Nikki Haley’s?
Same about Haley. NBC News’s exit poll results echoed this sentiment, with Trump receiving a 70% approval rating for his physical and mental fitness, compared to Haley’s 58%.
The Trump Factor
Trump’s undeniable presence in the Republican Party and his continuing popularity among conservative voters have played a significant role in shaping public opinion. Despite being out of office for over two years, Trump has maintained a strong following and has remained active in political discourse.
This unwavering support was evident in South Carolina, where 89% of primary voters identified as Trump supporters. These voters not only favored Trump’s physical and mental fitness but also had confidence in his ability to bring about economic prosperity, handle foreign relations, and make sound policy decisions.
Exit polls further revealed that Trump’s policies, such as his stance on immigration and the economy, were major factors influencing voters’ decisions. South Carolina GOP primary voters expressed satisfaction with Trump’s previous accomplishments and believed he was the candidate most capable of carrying out their conservative agenda.
Haley’s Appeal
While Haley fell short in the physical and mental fitness category, she had her own strengths that appealed to a significant portion of South Carolina voters. As a former governor of the state and a prominent figure in Republican politics, Haley had a solid base of support within the party.
Haley’s experience as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations also worked in her favor. South Carolina voters acknowledged her diplomatic skills, international experience, and ability to represent the country effectively on the global stage.
However, these factors were not enough to overcome the overwhelming support for Trump. South Carolina GOP primary voters saw Trump as a strong leader who could effectively advance their conservative agenda, and they believed that his physical and mental fitness was unmatched by any other candidate.
Implications for the 2024 Election
The South Carolina primary results indicate that Trump remains a dominant figure in Republican politics and enjoys significant support from the party’s base. This support could have far-reaching implications for the upcoming 2024 presidential election.
Trump’s physical and mental fitness, as perceived by South Carolina GOP primary voters, could influence the sentiment of voters in other states. If Trump decides to run for president again in 2024, his strong showing in South Carolina could bolster his campaign and provide him with much-needed momentum.
On the other hand, Haley’s strong support within the party, despite falling short in the fitness category, cannot be discounted. If Trump decides not to run or faces obstacles in his campaign, Haley could emerge as a viable alternative and gain support from voters who value her experience and diplomatic skills.
Overall, the South Carolina GOP primary results highlight the importance of physical and mental fitness in the eyes of Republican primary voters. As the 2024 election approaches, these results serve as a reminder that perceptions of a candidate’s health will continue to play a significant role in shaping the political landscape.
