Oklahoma education leader accuses ‘radical leftists’ of exploiting nonbinary student’s death
Oklahoma Schools Chief Criticizes “Radical Leftists” Exploiting Tragedy
Oklahoma’s Superintendent of Public Instruction, Ryan Walters, recently condemned the actions of “radical leftists” who he claims are using the death of a nonbinary student for political gain. Nex Benedict, a 16-year-old student, tragically passed away following an altercation in the girls’ bathroom at Owasso High School. While the cause of death has not been disclosed, authorities have stated that it was unrelated to physical trauma from the fight.
“I think it’s terrible that we’ve had some radical leftists who decided to run with a political agenda and try to weave a narrative that hasn’t been true,” Walters told The New York Times. “You’ve taken a tragedy, and you’ve had some folks try to exploit it for political gain.”
Walters also emphasized that Oklahoma schools would not permit students to use preferred names or pronouns that do not align with their biological sex. He stated, “You always treat individuals with dignity and respect because they’re made in God’s image. But that doesn’t change the truth. There are not multiple genders. There are two. That’s how God created us.”
The incident at Owasso High School occurred when Benedict poured water on several girls who were allegedly mocking them in the bathroom. In response, the girls knocked Benedict to the floor and engaged in physical violence. Benedict’s mother referred to them using female pronouns during a police interview conducted at the hospital on the same day. Tragically, Benedict was rushed back to the hospital the following day and pronounced dead.
The school district confirmed that the altercation lasted less than two minutes, and video footage released by the Owasso Police Department showed Benedict walking after the fight. The students involved were able to walk to the nurse’s office afterward. The state medical examiner’s office has yet to release the cause of death.
Opposition to Radical Gender Ideology
Walters has been vocal in his opposition to radical gender ideology, which has drawn criticism from left-wing individuals. In the past, he called for the dismissal of an Oklahoma school principal who had previously faced child pornography charges and also worked as a drag queen. Additionally, Walters firmly stated that the state would not participate in the “transgender game” of changing students’ genders on school records. Recently, he appointed Chaya Raichik, creator of the popular TikTok account “Libs Of TikTok,” to a state agency advisory committee.

In what ways can denying transgender students the right to use their preferred names and pronouns contribute to feelings of marginalization and discrimination, according to critics
With their biological sex. This statement has sparked fierce debate and criticism from LGBTQ+ advocates and activists who argue that it is a violation of transgender students’ rights and an act of discrimination.
The tragic incident that took place at Owasso High School has had a significant impact on the community and has become a subject of national attention. However, what initially started as an unfortunate incident has now escalated into a political battleground. Walters accuses “radical leftists” of distorting the facts surrounding the incident to further their own agenda.
While it is crucial to respect the privacy and honor the memory of the deceased student, it is equally important to ensure a fair and accurate representation of the incident. Authorities have made it clear that the cause of death was unrelated to physical trauma from the fight that occurred in the girls’ bathroom. However, Walters argues that certain individuals have taken advantage of the tragedy to advance their political narrative.
One of the key controversies arising from Walters’ statement relates to the policies regarding preferred names and pronouns in Oklahoma schools. The Superintendent firmly asserts that the state’s schools will not allow students to use names or pronouns that do not align with their biological sex. This stance has faced severe criticism from LGBTQ+ advocates who argue that it is a direct violation of the rights of transgender students.
The issue of preferred names and pronouns is of significant importance to transgender individuals as it provides a way for them to affirm their gender identity and navigate social situations more comfortably. Many argue that denying transgender students the right to use their preferred names and pronouns can contribute to feelings of marginalization and discrimination.
Furthermore, critics assert that Walters’ remarks are a reflection of a broader societal issue – the lack of understanding and acceptance for individuals who exist outside of traditional gender norms. They argue that his statements perpetuate harmful stereotypes and contribute to an unsafe and unwelcoming environment for LGBTQ+ students.
In response to the criticism, Walters has defended his position, citing the importance of maintaining consistency and adhering to the biological sex of students. He argues that his policies aim to protect the privacy and well-being of all students. However, critics counter this by highlighting the necessity of creating inclusive and supportive environments for all students, especially those who are marginalized.
The controversy surrounding the tragedy at Owasso High School raises important questions about the role of politics in the face of tragedy. While it is essential to investigate and address the incident’s underlying causes, it is equally vital to ensure that the discussion remains respectful and focused on the well-being of all students. Exploiting a tragedy for political gain serves no purpose but further dividing an already polarized society.
As the debate continues, it is crucial for policymakers, educators, and community members to listen to the concerns and experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals. By fostering dialogue, understanding, and empathy, we can work towards creating safe and inclusive school environments that prioritize the mental, emotional, and physical well-being of all students. Only through open-mindedness and collaboration can we hope to build a more inclusive society, where tragedies are not exploited for political gain but rather lessons to be learned from and changes to be made.
