Porter surpasses Garvey in California Senate race a week before primary: Poll
Former Baseball Star Steve Garvey Holds Strong in California Senate Race
A week before the primary, Republican contender Steve Garvey, a former baseball star, is making waves in California’s Senate race. Despite trailing behind a prominent House Democrat, Garvey is holding onto third place by a narrow margin.
The latest Public Policy Institute of California poll, released on Friday, reveals that Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA) is currently leading with 19% of the vote, closely followed by Garvey at 18%. Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) has a clear advantage, securing 24% of the vote, while Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) lags behind at 10%.
What’s impressive is that Garvey’s support has surged by 8 percentage points since December, surpassing the gains made by Schiff (4 percentage points) and Porter (3 percentage points). Despite entering the race later than his Democratic opponents, Garvey has gained significant traction in statewide polling.
In the Democratic stronghold of California, Garvey has managed to capture the attention of 49% of Republicans. Additionally, Schiff and Porter share 19% of independents’ support, with 15% favoring Garvey.
However, Garvey’s campaign team has raised concerns about the accuracy of the poll. According to campaign spokesman Matt Shupe, the poll was conducted from Feb. 6 to 13, before the final two primary debates and a majority of the spending. Shupe argues that the poll’s reliance on asking adults, rather than registered or likely voters, makes it unreliable. He believes the poll was already outdated upon its release.
A more recent California Politics/Emerson College/Nexstar Media poll, conducted from Feb. 16 to 18, after the first two debates but before the final one, paints a slightly different picture. Among likely voters, Garvey is now at 22% and Porter at 16%, while Schiff maintains his lead at 28%. Lee, unfortunately, remains in single digits at 9%.
It’s important to note that California operates under a “top two” open primary system. This means that the two candidates with the highest rankings, regardless of party affiliation, in the March 5 primary will proceed to the November ballot.

Why do Republicans and moderate Democrats support Garvey?
Policy Institute poll shows Garvey with 12% of voter support, compared to his Democratic opponent’s 22%. While the odds may seem stacked against him, Garvey remains confident in his ability to win over voters and emerge victorious in November.
Garvey, known for his tenacity and determination on the baseball diamond, is now bringing that same drive to the world of politics. Despite being a political newcomer, Garvey has been able to gain support from both Republicans and moderate Democrats, who admire his work ethic and commitment to serving the community.
One of Garvey’s key platforms is revitalizing California’s economy. He believes that his experience as a successful businessman and entrepreneur gives him an advantage in understanding the needs of small businesses and job creation. Garvey advocates for reducing regulations and creating a more business-friendly environment, which he believes will lead to increased economic growth and opportunities for all Californians.
Another major aspect of Garvey’s campaign is education reform. As a father and grandfather, he understands the importance of providing a quality education for future generations. Garvey supports increasing funding for public schools, improving teacher pay and training, and expanding access to technology in classrooms. He believes that investing in education is crucial for California’s future success and prosperity.
In addition to his policy stances, Garvey’s persona and charisma have resonated with voters. Many admire his commitment to family values and his dedication to giving back to the community. Garvey has been involved in numerous philanthropic endeavors throughout his career and has continued to make service a priority in his campaign. He has been actively engaging with voters, hearing their concerns, and offering solutions that align with their needs.
Despite the challenges of running as a Republican in a predominantly Democratic state, Garvey remains optimistic and focused on his goal of representing the people of California. He understands the importance of bipartisan cooperation and finding common ground to address the pressing issues facing the state.
While his opponent may have the advantage in terms of party affiliation, Garvey believes that his experience as a proven leader and his ability to connect with voters on a personal level sets him apart. He is committed to running a positive and issue-focused campaign, highlighting the areas where he can make a difference and bring about meaningful change.
As the primary approaches, Garvey continues to gain momentum and attract supporters from all walks of life. With his strong work ethic, dedication to his community, and a passion for making a difference, Garvey is proving that he is more than just a former baseball star – he is a force to be reckoned with in the political arena.
Come November, it will be up to the voters of California to decide if Garvey’s leadership and vision align with their own. If elected, Garvey promises to represent the interests of all Californians and bring about positive change that will benefit the state for years to come.
