UnitedHealth hackers claim to have stolen ‘millions’ of records before retracting their statement
Breaking News: February 28, 2024 – 2:34 PM PST
In a shocking revelation, the hackers responsible for the UnitedHealth Group breach have claimed to have stolen millions of sensitive records, including medical insurance and health data, from the company. The message was posted on their darknet site but quickly deleted, leaving cybersecurity experts scrambling to gather evidence.
The group, known as “Blackcat” or “ALPHV,” boasted about stealing a whopping 8 terabytes of data from UnitedHealth, with their primary target being the Change Healthcare unit. UnitedHealth has acknowledged the claim and is currently investigating the matter.
Blackcat further revealed that they targeted other partners as well, including Medicare, Tricare (the U.S. military medical health agency), and CVS Health. However, the hackers removed their claim without providing any evidence or screenshots, leaving the authenticity of their claims in question.
Attempts to reach the hackers have been unsuccessful so far, and the news agency Reuters has been unable to verify the claims. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and Tricare have not yet commented on the situation.
CVS, one of the targeted partners, stated that they are aware of the hackers’ statement but have not confirmed any impact on their member or patient information.
Cybersecurity expert Brett Callow suggests that the hackers may have made the statement and then deleted it for various reasons. It could be a tactic to initiate ransom negotiations with UnitedHealth or to gain attention and pressure the healthcare company into negotiations. Alternatively, the hackers may have simply decided to avoid unnecessary attention at this time.
Blackcat has a history of disruptive hacks, previously targeting MGM Resorts International and Caesars Entertainment, causing significant disruptions to their operations.
