Thune joins Senate GOP leader race
The No. 2 Republican in the Senate Aims to Replace McConnell as Leader
The Senate GOP is about to see a major shakeup as Minority Whip John Thune (R-SD) has expressed his interest in taking over the leadership position currently held by Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY).
Thune follows in the footsteps of Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), who has also announced his bid for the position. McConnell has been the Senate GOP leader for an impressive 16 years.
In an interview with KELOLAND News, Thune expressed his desire to become the Senate majority or minority leader, stating, “I hope to be. And I’m going to do everything I can to convince my colleagues. They’re the voters. They’re the ones who will ultimately make the decision.”

Thune, who has been serving in the Senate for nearly two decades since winning his first term in 2004, was elected GOP whip in 2018, succeeding Cornyn in the position.
Similar to Cornyn, Thune has shown his support for former President Donald Trump, endorsing him in the recent White House race. Thune aligned with Trump’s position 91.4% of the time during Trump’s presidency, according to FiveThirtyEight.
Other potential candidates for the GOP leader position include Senate Republican Conference Chairman John Barrasso (R-WY), Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL), and NRSC Chairman Steve Daines (R-MT).
The election for the new Senate GOP leader is expected to take place in November, with the winner assuming the role in January of the following year.
When McConnell announced his plans to step aside, he emphasized the need for a new generation of leadership. However, he intends to remain in the Senate until his term ends in 2027, promising to continue defying his critics.
In his interview with KELOLAND News, Thune took aim at President Joe Biden and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), expressing his commitment to lead the effort against their liberal agenda and provide a check and balance in the Senate.
What factors suggest that Senator Thune may have Majority Leader McConnell’s support in his quest for leadership?

Thune’s announcement came after a meeting with McConnell. This suggests that Thune may have McConnell’s support in his quest for leadership. And with Cornyn also vying for the position, the race for the Senate GOP leader will be an interesting one to watch.
John Thune, 60, has served as the Minority Whip since 2019. Before that, he held the position of Republican Conference Chairman, and he has been a senator since 2005. Thune has built a strong reputation within the Republican Party, known for his conservative values and leadership skills.
If Thune were to become the Senate GOP leader, he would play a crucial role in shaping the party’s agenda and leading Republicans in negotiations with Democrats. As the No. 2 Republican in the Senate, Thune has already demonstrated his ability to rally party members and build consensus.
However, he faces tough competition from John Cornyn, who serves as the Senate’s Republican Whip and has a strong network of allies within the party. Cornyn has been a senator since 2002 and has held various leadership positions throughout his career.
While Thune and Cornyn both bring valuable experience and leadership to the table, their visions for the future of the Republican Party may differ. Thune has been vocal in criticizing former President Donald Trump and has called for the party to move in a different direction. On the other hand, Cornyn has been more supportive of Trump and his policies.
The race for Senate GOP leader will not only determine who holds the top leadership position but also reflect the direction the party wants to take moving forward. Will they choose Thune, who represents a more moderate and independent faction of the party, or Cornyn, who aligns with the Trump base? The decision lies in the hands of the Senate Republicans, who will vote on their new leader.
Replacing McConnell as the Senate GOP leader will be no easy task. McConnell has been a powerful and influential figure within the party. He is known for his strategic thinking, ability to navigate complex political landscapes, and fundraising prowess. McConnell has played a key role in shaping Republican policy and has been instrumental in pushing through conservative judges and tax cuts.
However, Thune and Cornyn’s bids for leadership indicate that there may be a desire for change within the party. Both senators bring fresh perspectives and ideas to the table, and their bids for leadership show that there may be a shift in the Republican Party’s priorities.
The race for Senate GOP leader will undoubtedly be an intense and closely watched one. It will not only determine who leads the party but also shape the future of the Republican Party. As Thune and Cornyn vie for the top spot, the Senate Republicans will have to carefully consider the direction they want to take and the leader they believe will best represent their values and goals.
In the coming weeks, Senate Republicans will hold their leadership elections and make their decision. It will be interesting to see who comes out on top and how the party will move forward under new leadership. One thing is for certain – the landscape of Senate GOP politics is about to change.
