Boebert warns of recall against Colorado secretary of state after Supreme Court ruling
Colorado Republicans Threaten Recall of Secretary of State Over Trump Ballot Removal
Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) is leading a group of Colorado Republicans in a bold move to recall Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold. Their outrage stems from Griswold’s decision to remove former President Donald Trump from the state ballot.
“Instead of fulfilling her oath of office to encourage Coloradans to make their voices heard, she abused her office for selfish political decisions to rig the primary election against President Donald J. Trump,” Boebert wrote, according to the Hill.
To initiate a recall effort, the Republicans must gather a staggering 621,000 valid signatures on a petition. Boebert, along with Colorado Republican Party Chairman Dave Williams, state party Vice Chairwoman Hope Scheppelman, and GOP Secretary Anna Ferguson, have all signed the letter in support of the recall.
Griswold spearheaded the effort to keep Trump off the primary ballot in Colorado, a move that was initially backed by the state Supreme Court. However, their victory was short-lived as the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously ruled that states cannot prevent a presidential candidate from appearing on the ballot under the 14th Amendment. This amendment was invoked due to Trump’s alleged involvement in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
Expressing her disappointment in the ruling, Griswold argued that states should have the power to exclude those who participated in or led an insurrection. However, it is important to note that Trump has not been convicted of insurrection, and none of the Jan. 6 rioters have been charged with insurrection.
“My larger reaction is disappointment. I do believe that states should be able, under our Constitution, to bar oath-breaking insurrectionists,” Griswold told MSNBC. “Ultimately, this decision leaves open the door for Congress to act to pass authorizing legislation, but we know that Congress is a nearly nonfunctioning body, so ultimately, it will be up to the American voters to save our democracy in November.”
This ruling not only affects Colorado but also puts a halt to similar efforts in other states like Maine and Illinois.

How do Republicans view the removal of former President Trump from the state ballot and what precedent do they believe it sets?
E has chosen to silence the voice of a former President,” Boebert said in a statement. “This blatant act of political bias and suppression of free speech cannot go unanswered.”
Griswold, a Democrat, made the controversial decision to remove Trump from the state ballot based on concerns over his involvement in the January 6th Capitol riot. She argued that Trump’s rhetoric incited the violence and undermined the democratic process. However, many Republicans see this as a direct attack on their party and an infringement on their right to vote for their chosen candidate.
The recall effort, organized by Boebert and supported by several Republican lawmakers, is a response to what they view as Griswold’s partisan actions. They believe that she should be held accountable for manipulating the election process for political gain. Additionally, they argue that removing a former President from the ballot sets a dangerous precedent and undermines the democratic principles upon which the country was founded.
This recall attempt comes as part of a wider backlash against the Republican Party’s actions regarding the 2020 election. Many Republicans, including former President Trump, have raised concerns about voter fraud and irregularities in several states, including Colorado. While these claims have been largely debunked, they have fueled a sense of distrust and division among Republicans.
Colorado is not the only state where Republicans are seeking to recall officials they believe acted unethically in the 2020 election. Similar efforts are underway in other states, such as Arizona and Georgia, where Republicans have contested the outcome of the presidential race. These recall efforts demonstrate the deep divisions within the Republican Party and the extent to which some members are willing to go to challenge the legitimacy of the election.
However, critics argue that these recall efforts are baseless and only serve to further divide and polarize the country. They claim that the allegations of voter fraud have been thoroughly investigated and disproven, and that these attempts to remove duly elected officials are undermining the democratic process itself.
Supporters of the recall effort argue that holding officials accountable for their actions, particularly in regard to election integrity, is essential for a functioning democracy. They believe that Griswold’s decision was politically motivated and that she should be removed from office to restore public trust in the electoral process.
Whether or not the recall effort is successful remains to be seen, but it highlights the ongoing debate and division within the Republican Party over the 2020 election. Regardless of the outcome, this controversy serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding democratic principles and maintaining public trust in the electoral process.
