A groundbreaking study reveals that electric vehicles (EV) may not be as environmentally friendly as previously thought. In fact, they release more toxic emissions into the atmosphere compared to gas-powered vehicles.
The study, originally published in 2022 by Emission Analytics, gained significant attention after being featured in a thought-provoking op-ed in the Wall Street Journal.
According to the study, EV brakes and tires release “1,850 times more particles of pollution” compared to modern tailpipes in gas-powered vehicles. This is due to the fact that EVs are on average 30% heavier, causing increased wear and tear on brakes and tires.
Surprisingly, the study found that tire wear emissions from just half a metric ton of EV battery weight are over 400 times greater than direct exhaust particulate emissions. Considering that the average EV battery weighs close to 1,000 pounds, this is a concerning revelation.
These particle emissions can have severe health consequences, including heart disease, lung disease, asthma, and even hospitalization in extreme cases.
These findings raise doubts about the practicality of the Biden administration’s EV mandates, which aim to make two-thirds of new cars in America fully-electric by 2032. California’s plan to ban all gas vehicles by 2035 is also called into question.
Nick Molden, the founder and CEO of Emissions Analytics, highlights that increased exposure to these toxins can also harm wildlife. He warns that “a lot of it [chemicals] goes into the soil and water, affecting animals and fish. And we then go and eat the animals and fish, so we are ingesting tire pollution.”
Molden suggests that the best solution is to “change the recipe” and reduce the number of toxic chemicals in tires, offering a win-win situation for both the environment and human health.
As a response to these findings, the Environmental Protection Agency plans to increase emission standards starting in 2027, forcing automakers to sell even fewer gas-powered vehicles.

How does the production of electric vehicles contribute to pollution?
Llution and brake dust.” This raises concerns not only for human health but also for the overall ecosystem.
Furthermore, the study suggests that the production of EVs also contributes significantly to pollution. The extraction and processing of raw materials, such as lithium and cobalt, required for the production of EV batteries result in high levels of carbon emissions and environmental degradation. Additionally, the disposal of used batteries raises concerns about proper waste management and potential environmental contamination.
These findings emphasize the need for a comprehensive examination of the environmental impact of different transportation options. While EVs offer the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on fossil fuels, the study reveals that they are not a panacea for environmental issues.
It is essential to consider the complete life cycle of vehicles, from production to disposal, and the associated environmental consequences. Policies and regulations regarding the promotion and adoption of EVs should take into account these findings and aim for a balanced approach that considers the overall sustainability of transportation.
Additionally, further research and investment are needed to develop and implement technologies that can mitigate the emissions and environmental impact of EVs. This includes advancements in battery technology, recycling methods, and sustainable sourcing of raw materials.
In conclusion, the groundbreaking study raises questions about the environmental friendliness of electric vehicles. While they offer certain benefits, such as reduced greenhouse gas emissions, their contribution to other forms of pollution and the overall impact of their life cycle should be carefully considered. It is crucial for policymakers, manufacturers, and consumers to make informed decisions that prioritize sustainability and minimize the negative environmental consequences associated with transportation.
