During a violent, off-campus high school fight that was captured on video and has since gone viral online, a teenage girl in Missouri had her head repeatedly pounded into concrete, prompting a seizure and leaving her hospitalized.
According to St. Louis police spokeswoman Vera Clay, the fight involving the teenage victim—whose full identity has not been made public due to her age and who has only been referred to as “Kailee”—started at a crossroads just north of Hazelwood High School on Friday about 2:30 p.m. local time.
Devastating videos of the altercation that have been shared online show a group brawl, where two girls are seen punching and pushing each other until one of them throws the other to the ground.
The attacker is seen beating the victim and calling her a “b*tch” while the victim tries to push the assailant away. Meanwhile, bystanders can be heard saying, “Damn,” while one of the girls straddles the victim and continues to repeatedly smack her head into a concrete road.
Soon after, the victim is seen on the ground, squirming and what appears to be having a seizure. Additionally, no bystanders near the victim appear to help or check up on her during the purported seizure.
According to Clay, when police officers arrived, they discovered that the girl did in fact have a serious head injury and needed medical attention as soon as possible.
Fox 2 reported that the victim was then transferred to a nearby hospital and was said to be in critical condition.
A 15-year-old unidentified individual, presumably the girl depicted in the video, was later arrested on suspicion of assault after students who witnessed the incident spoke with police. Some surfacing reports have named the assailant as 15-year-old Maurnice DeClue. However, this claim has not been fact-checked and remains alleged.
“Bullying and fighting in the community is an issue for which we all need to take ownership and work towards a resolution for the sake of our children,” school officials said in a statement. “The Hazelwood School District offers our sincerest condolences to everyone involved and will offer additional emotional support from our support and crisis team to those in need.”

How can schools create a culture of respect and empathy to ensure the safety and well-being of students?
And their safety,” said Clay in a statement.
This violent incident has sparked outrage and renewed discussions about bullying and school safety. It highlights the urgent need for stronger measures to prevent and address incidents of violence and harassment in schools.
While the circumstances leading up to the fight are still under investigation, it is clear that this incident was a result of unresolved conflicts and a lack of intervention. It is crucial for schools and communities to create a culture of respect and empathy, where students feel safe and supported.
Prevention efforts should focus on early identification of conflicts and bullying, effective communication between students, parents, and school staff, and the implementation of proactive interventions and support systems. It is essential to nurture a sense of belonging and inclusion among students, as well as teach conflict resolution and empathy skills.
In addition, it is imperative for schools to have comprehensive anti-bullying policies in place, which clearly define acceptable behavior and consequences for perpetrators. These policies should also emphasize the importance of reporting incidents and provide students with multiple channels to seek help and support.
Schools must also prioritize training and professional development for staff members, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to effectively respond to and prevent incidents of bullying and violence. This includes promoting a positive school climate, fostering healthy relationships, and implementing restorative justice practices when appropriate.
Furthermore, collaboration between schools, law enforcement agencies, and community organizations is vital for addressing the root causes of violence and providing comprehensive support to victims and perpetrators. This can include counseling services, conflict mediation programs, and workshops on social-emotional learning.
It is morally and ethically imperative that we strive for safer schools and healthier environments for our children. Each and every one of us has a responsibility to actively promote peace, empathy, and kindness in our schools and communities.
Let this incident serve as a wake-up call to take immediate action and work together to prevent future acts of violence and ensure the well-being of all students.
