The Senate Confirms Former Rep. Sean‍ Patrick Maloney as U.S. Representative to‌ the OECD

The Senate has‍ officially confirmed ⁢former Representative Sean ‌Patrick Maloney (D-NY) ⁣to serve as the United States’ representative ⁢to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and‍ Development (OECD). This appointment grants Maloney the prestigious ‍title of ambassador and was ‌approved⁤ by⁣ a margin⁢ of 63-31.

President Joe Biden nominated Maloney for this role in May of last year, despite Maloney losing his swing-district seat to Representative Mike Lawler (R-NY) ⁣in 2022 ‌while‌ serving as chairman of House Democrats’ campaign arm.

However, Maloney’s nomination faced a potential setback ‍when Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) threatened to vote⁤ against his confirmation ⁤due to⁢ his advisory role at Coinbase, the ⁤nation’s largest cryptocurrency‍ exchange.

In response, Maloney, a trusted ally of former‌ House Speaker Nancy ⁣Pelosi (D-CA) and a six-term ‍House representative, assured Warren in a letter that he would immediately resign from‍ all private sector advocacy positions if confirmed. He also ‌pledged to recuse himself from any decision-making processes related to ⁢digital assets ‌within the agency.

Warren ultimately agreed to support Maloney’s nomination after receiving his letter.

Maloney has already relocated⁤ to Paris, near the OECD headquarters, and will assume his new role without delay.
