Hunter Biden Withdraws Proposal for Public Testimony in Impeachment Inquiry
Hunter Biden Declines Public Testimony in Father’s Impeachment Probe
In an unexpected twist, Hunter Biden has pulled back on his prior commitment to testify before the Republican-led investigation into alleged influence peddling by his father, Joe Biden.
In a correspondence that took many by surprise, Hunter Biden’s legal representative Abbe Lowell forwarded a decisive letter to the House Oversight Committee. Lowell outlined that his client would be absent from the much-anticipated hearing, pointing to scheduling conflicts with a key court date in one of Hunter’s federal criminal cases. However, Lowell’s tone suggested deeper reasons for the refusal, denouncing the hearing as nothing more than a “carnival side show.”
“Your blatant planned-for-media event is not a proper proceeding but an obvious attempt to throw a Hail Mary pass after the game has ended,” Lowell wrote to Rep. James Comer (R., Ky.), the overseer of the Committee.
This decision marks a stark retreat from Hunter Biden’s stance last November when he proposed a public testimony as a tactical move to circumvent a congressional subpoena. The strategy then was to favor an open hearing to prevent the twisting of a closed-door deposition.
The Invitation and the Probe’s Details
Chairman Comer has extended an invitation not only to Hunter Biden but also to three of his former business associates for a March 20 hearing, provocatively titled “Influence Peddling: Examining Joe Biden’s Abuse of Public Office.” This is all part of the broader investigation into the President’s alleged meddling in his son’s dealings.
The impeachment investigation against President Biden, initiated by Republicans last year, revolves around claims of undue influence in his son’s foreign business ventures. While the President has consistently denied any association with such affairs, emerging evidence, including eye-witness accounts, suggests he had been present in meetings that involved Hunter and his business partners.
A curious twist in the narrative emerged when Hunter Biden, during a deposition on February 28, adamantly stated his father’s detachment from his business ventures. Nonetheless, he confirmed a joint meeting in California with his father and businessman Tony Bobulinski as they were engaged with the Chinese firm, CEFC China Energy.
Despite his assertions, Hunter Biden admitted to lapses in memory regarding other potential meetings involving CEFC officials.
Another layer was added by Rob Walker, a long-standing Biden family friend, who testified that the Bidens partook in a 2017 meeting with CEFC executives—a meeting that later led to a $6 million payment to the Bidens for consultative and legal expertise.
Committee chairman Comer expressed frustration, reminding the public that, “Hunter Biden for months stated he wanted a public hearing, but now that one has been offered alongside his business associates that he worked with for years, he is refusing to come.”
Despite Hunter Biden’s latest stance, Comer remains adamant the hearing will proceed as planned, explicitly stating his expectations for Hunter Biden’s participation.
