McConnell Slams Schumer’s Israel Comments as ‘Disturbing and Hypocritical
A Sharp Rebuke from McConnell to Schumer on Israel
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) didn’t mince words as he criticized Majority Leader Schumer (D-NY) for his remarks about Israel, amidst escalating tensions following a Hamas attack.
McConnell Speaks Up for a Sovereign Ally
During a potent address on the Senate floor, McConnell expressed dismay at Schumer’s suggestion for Israel to conduct new elections and criticized his take on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s leadership.
Sen. McConnell: “It is grotesque and hypocritical for Americans who hyperventilate about foreign interference in our own democracy to call for the removal of a democratically elected leader of Israel. This is unprecedented. We should not treat fellow democracies this way at all.” pic.twitter.com/K6xOd1a9Ey

“The Jewish state of Israel deserves an ally that stands with them, not against them,” McConnell declared, emphasizing America’s unwavering support for Israel’s democracy and unity government.
Identifying the Real ‘Obstacles to Peace’
Countering earlier statements from Schumer, McConnell identified Hamas and certain factions within the Palestinian Authority as the primary barriers to lasting peace in the region.
“These genocidal terrorists, not Israel’s elected officials, pose the real threat. Blurring these critical distinctions is unfair and unhelpful,” McConnell stated.
He challenged international pundits, including American politicians, to exercise restraint, warning against meddling in the affairs of a democratic ally.
“Foreign interference has no place in the democratic process of another country, especially one as close an ally as Israel,” he emphasized.
“This isn’t just about one leader’s policies; it’s about Israel’s right to govern itself without external pressures,” McConnell added, taking a dig at what he perceives as a broader anti-Israel sentiment within the Democratic Party.
Schumer’s previous comments included casting Netanyahu, Hamas, certain Palestinian populations, right-wing Israelis, and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas as ‘obstacles to peace.’
Defending Democracy and National Sovereignty
McConnell’s closing remarks were a staunch defense of democratic integrity and national sovereignty, highlighting the right of Israeli citizens alone to determine their governance.
He argued that international respect for Israeli elections is fundamental to honoring the sovereignty and democratic principles of an ally.
McConnell posed a thought-provoking conclusion: “To respect an ally’s decisions is to respect its democracy. We must choose to either stand with Israel in its quest for peace or undermine the very democracy we claim to support.”
