Gaetz Served Subpoena in Associate’s Defamation Suit Over Sex Trafficking Probe
Rep. Matt Gaetz Entangled in Legal Battle Amid Defamation Claims Linked to DOJ Investigation
In a twist of complex legal narratives, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) finds himself with a subpoena for a deposition that might shine a light on a series of unsettling allegations. While not on the defense or in the prosecutorial seat, Gaetz could still face pointed questions regarding claims of an illicit sexual encounter with a minor.
The call for Gaetz’s deposition stems from legal action taken by Chris Dorworth, a former Florida state legislator and friend, who is ensnared in a damaging scandal tied to a Department of Justice probe, which has now led to a defamation lawsuit.
“Congressman Gaetz received a witness subpoena in an ongoing lawsuit between outside parties,” a spokesperson for Gaetz clarified. Despite the subpoena, “He is not being sued, and he is neither a plaintiff nor a defendant at this time.”
Despite the gravity of the situation, Gaetz remains steady, denying all charges related to the case, supported by a 2020 DOJ clearance of any misconduct on his part. Parallel to Gaetz’s steadfast denials, Dorworth also refutes allegations that have swept him up in the inquiry’s wake.
Unraveling the Lawsuit Web
Dorworth’s lawsuit, launched in April, implicates former Gaetz associate, Joel Greenberg, and an unnamed woman—pointing the finger at both for a plot to tarnish his reputation through serious accusations of “engaging in sex trafficking, having sex with a minor, prostitution, and obstructing justice.”
It becomes even murkier when considering Greenberg’s own entanglements with the law. He has already confessed to a string of federal crimes, including sex trafficking, which led to an 11-year prison sentence—a shadow that inevitably falls over those within his previous orbit.
Dorworth suggests the Gaetz subpoena is just another thread in a tapestry weaved by Greenberg’s camp, aimed at reducing his current prison sentence by implicating others, including Gaetz, in similar sex crime allegations.
“The federal government investigated their lies fully and came back with no charges. Greenberg’s lawyers have publicly clamored for more people to be charged to reduce his prison sentence,” explained Dorworth. He regards the use of wealth and influence in such maneuvers as a “grotesque and shameless abuse,” holding them accountable for the alleged damages inflicted.
The question hanging in the air is whether Gaetz will submit to the subpoena’s demands. As the situation unfolds, interested eyes will remain fixed on how Gaetz navigates this complex legal landscape—a scenario which is sure to reserve more chapters in the ongoing saga.
