GOP House nominee dismisses mass email admitting loss as irrelevant
An Electrifying Twist in Ohio’s Congressional Race
In a turn of events that sent ripples through the Buckeye State’s political landscape, a Republican vying for a seat in Congress jumped the gun with a premature concession via email, only to retract it moments later in a dramatic mix-up that had the campaign urging recipients to “disregard the email.”
Tonight did not unfold as anticipated, but we should remember, the heart of this race beats in the primary. My congratulations extend to the Congressman-Elect.
The Email Heard ‘Round Ohio
As the clock ticked down with just four hours until the polls closed, Derek Myers’s camp broadcasted an email containing what appeared to be an early surrender, mistakenly concluding his own electoral journey. The message brimmed with anticipatory support for “uniting behind [the congressman-elect]” with sights set on “evicting Joe Biden.”
A private gathering in Chillicothe, buzzing with over a hundred friends and supporters, served as the backdrop for what seemed to be Myers’s capitulation.
A Swift Correction
But the narrative took a swift turn. Myers’s official social media was alight, aiming to clarify the confusion:
Attention Press: My campaign comms team has sent out an email in error as we prepare for both possible outcomes tonight. The polls remain open until 7:30 p.m. Please disregard the email. Thank you.
His campaign gave insights to the Washington Examiner about the erroneous concession alert.
The Honest Mistake
“Two emails lay in wait: one heralding victory, the other conceding defeat. In haste, the wrong missive was dispatched,” the campaign divulged.
Emphasizing it was merely a matter of pressing ‘send now’ as opposed to marking it as a ‘draft,’ they added a sprinkle of reassurance: “Anyone in comms knows that preparing for each scenario is just common sense – it’s strategic.“
Further, they stated, “Regardless of tonight’s verdict, our gratitude for this incredible journey is undiminished.”

Navigating Ohio’s Political Waters
Myers, branding himself as the undeniable “America First” contender, was amidst an intense 11-person slugfest for the Republican nod in Ohio’s 2nd Congressional District – a territory with a staunchly Republican lean of R+25, as assessed by the Cook Political Report.
With Rep. Brad Wenstrup stepping away from the political stage after representing Ohio since 2013, this district’s race was wide open – and as the night’s drama proved, anything but predictable.
