Republican Lawmaker Urges Dismissal of Charges Against Gold Star Father
A Plea for Compassion: The Case of a Gold Star Father
In a heartfelt plea, a House Republican has stepped forward with a firm declaration that the charges against a Gold Star father, arrested for his emotional outcry during President Joe Biden’s recent State of the Union address, should be unequivocally dropped.
Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), showing support for the grieving parent, penned a letter to Capitol Police Chief J. Thomas Manger, meticulously presenting the case for Steve Nikoui, who mourns his son, Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Kareem Nikoui, tragically killed in the 2021 Kabul airport attack.
Issa remarked, “Mr. Nikoui’s poignant gesture at the State of the Union—where he poignantly cried out, ‘Abbey Gate! Kareem Nikoui! Second Battalion, First Marines!’—signifies a deep-rooted chasm: the palpable tension between the immense sacrifices borne by our service members and the honor due to them.”
He continued, emphasizing, “Although his interruption seemed untimely, Mr. Nikoui’s words revealed nothing but a fervent plea for recognition of the heartache borne by families of the 13 who paid the ultimate price for our country.”
As a special guest of Rep. Brian Mast (R-FL), the elder Nikoui’s passionate declaration during the presidential speech led to a brief pause, underscoring a moment of intense personal grief in the national political arena.

Subsequent to his expression of heartache, Nikoui was courteously escorted from the chamber and thereafter detained briefly, facing charges that may include a fine and potential jail time—an echo of his ongoing ordeal as reported by The Daily Wire.
In the Morning Wire podcast, Nikoui expressed no regrets for his actions during the address, standing firm in his belief that he neither disrespected the setting nor tarnished the honor of his son.

Issa, having had the “honor” of acquainting himself with Nikoui, conducted a public forum last August to give voices like Nikoui’s a platform. The congressman also shared the heartrending update of further tragedy within the Nikoui family following the Kabul incident—a testament to the ongoing ramifications of loss.
In describing Steve Nikoui, Rep. Issa used words like “man of kindness and integrity,” painting a picture of a father’s profound love and dedication to the legacy of his son and fellow fallen heroes.
The impassioned letter concludes with Issa’s earnest recommendation for empathy and justice, asking Chief Manger to duly consider the circumstances of Nikoui’s actions and urging for the dismissal of charges.
“Your authority grants you the discretion in this matter. I trust you will encounter an exceptional citizen with immense national pride, integrity, and honor. I am hopeful you will choose to alleviate Mr. Nikoui of these charges,” Issa earnestly appealed.
