Get ready for double the buzz: Billions of cicadas are about to emerge this spring from a unique double brood
2024: A Symphony of Cicadas
The cicada extravaganza in 2024 is set to shake things up with not just one, but two buzzing broods bursting onto the scene. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime spectacle that hasn’t graced our ears for over two centuries!
This extraordinary phenomenon last occurred way back in 1803, back when Thomas Jefferson was calling the shots in the White House. And guess what? We’ll have to wait until the year 2245 to witness this double-header cicada show again!
Brood XIX: The Southwest and Midwest Spectacle
Get ready folks, because Brood XIX is gearing up to make its grand entrance in a whopping 14 states spanning the Southwest and the Midwest. Brace yourselves for a cicada takeover in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.
Brood XIII: The Midwestern Marvel
Meanwhile, over in the heart of the Midwest, Brood XIII will be stretching its wings in states like Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Michigan.
As soon as the soil thermometer hits around 64 degrees, these periodical party animals will start shimmying out of their subterranean homes like clockwork, ready to celebrate spring. Keep your eyes and ears peeled from mid-May to late June for the grand cicada chorus.
Once they emerge into the sunlight, it’s a whirlwind romance for these cicadas. They’ll mingle, mate, and lay eggs by the millions on trees before bidding adieu and leaving their offspring to carry on the cicada legacy.
Despite their short stay above ground, lasting only around four to six weeks, these noisy critters sure know how to make an entrance!
