Lawmakers Briefed on Chinese-Backed Marijuana Farms’ Spread
Recent Developments and Federal Response
Top House lawmakers, including Rep. August Pfluger (R-TX) and Rep. Clay Higgins, were briefed by the Department of Homeland Security and the Drug Enforcement Agency about the alarming rise of illegal Chinese-backed marijuana farms in the US. The discussion also involved the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP).
The focus was on the surge of illicit marijuana grow operations run by Chinese nationals within the US and the collaborative efforts of federal entities to address this pressing issue.
In states like Maine and New Mexico, significant Chinese-backed marijuana activities have been unearthed, with Border Patrol in Maine alone discovering around 270 illegal grow operations valued in billions. A noteworthy incident in rural Tennessee saw a suspected Chinese national apprehended for running a large-scale marijuana operation.
“These operations often collaborate with transnational criminal groups, partake in human trafficking and exploitative labor practices, and present substantial threats to public safety,” the spokesperson highlighted the severity of the situation.

Following the briefing, the House Homeland Security Committee, under the leadership of Chair Mark Green, Pfluger, and Higgins, pursued further insights from DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and DEA Administrator Anne Milgram. Their letter emphasized the substantial risks posed by illicit Chinese-backed marijuana operations nationwide.
The lawmakers underscored the significant threat to national security stemming from these operations, noting Chinese investment in such illicit activities, often involving cash payments for extensive land usage.
