Republicans focus on Education Department for financial aid delays while Cardona shifts responsibility

Republicans Target Education Department‍ Over Financial Aid ⁣Delays

The Department of Education has become the latest target of the Republican‌ Party’s⁣ ire after Secretary Miguel ⁤Cardona blamed colleges for the delay in financial aid offers.

Cardona claimed some ⁣colleges‌ and ‍universities were not⁢ ready to receive the “institutional student information records” that are necessary to give students financial aid offers.

“Based on some of the requests we received from⁤ schools earlier this week, we believe some schools are still not ⁣fully prepared to receive ISIRs,” Cardona said in a letter last ⁢week. “It’s‌ critical that your team is ready to receive student records and can begin⁢ putting together student‌ aid‌ packages as efficiently as possible.”

Republican Criticism and Departmental Response

  • Sen. Bill Cassidy criticized the Education Department for⁤ delays, calling for accountability.
  • Rep. Virginia Foxx placed blame solely on⁤ the Department of ‍Education for the delays.

The delay‍ in the FAFSA⁣ revamp rollout has impacted over ‍6 million college applications, contrary to its ‌purpose. While ISIRs⁣ have⁣ started reaching colleges, the processing rate⁤ remains slow.

The Education⁤ Department emphasized their commitment‌ to ⁢aiding students efficiently,‌ promising to support colleges in dispersing aid promptly.

The prolonged delay might necessitate⁤ colleges to extend commitment deadlines until mid-April, affecting students’ decision-making⁢ time frame.

Many U.S. colleges ‍have already postponed deadlines⁤ due to ⁣the ongoing delays, with more expected to follow suit.
