“You know, part of what I talk to families about is the fact that one of five families in America has a family member that has died because of gun violence,” Harris emphasized. “That the leading cause of death for the children of America is gun violence.”
Addressing the Alarming Rise in Gun-Related Deaths
Recent statistics from Pew Research revealing a 50% increase in gun-related deaths among teens between 2019 and 2021 have ignited concerns. Experts suggest a correlation between the surge in gun fatalities and a rise in juvenile crime during the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns.
Harris’s advocacy focuses on President Biden’s agenda for an assault weapons ban and other essential gun control measures. She underscored the importance of the newly introduced National Extreme Risk Protection Order Resource Center to support states with red flag laws.
An Urgent Call for Collaboration
“Of the 21 states that have passed red flag laws, I challenge the others to come on board,” Harris urged. “We have resources to assist in implementing these critical measures to address this pressing issue.” Red flag laws empower courts to temporarily restrict access to firearms based on concerns about an individual’s mental state or potential for violence.
The Biden administration’s commitment to gun safety is evident in the allocation of $750 million towards red flag law programs, mental health initiatives, crisis intervention programs, and state-level actions. To date, only $238 million of these funds have been disbursed by the Department of Justice since 2021.
