White House criticizes Israel’s move to restrict foreign news outlets within its borders
The White House is troubled by Israel’s plan to restrict foreign news outlets within the country, with a specific reference to Al Jazeera. The Israeli parliament passed a law enabling the closure of such outlets if they are seen as detrimental to national security. This move has drawn scrutiny from the White House. The White House expresses concern over Israel’s legislation allowing the closure of foreign news outlets like Al Jazeera if deemed a threat to national security. This action is under scrutiny by the White House, highlighting tensions over press freedom and national security measures.
The White House is concerned that Israel is moving to block certain foreign news outlets from operating inside the country.
The Israeli parliament passed a law earlier in the day that would allow the government to close foreign outlets, specifically Al Jazeera, if they are deemed harmful to Israel’s national security.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre addressed the new law when asked about it during Monday’s press briefing, suggesting that President Joe Biden does not support the move.
“We’ve seen the reports, and certainly, I’m going to refer to Israel for what they may or may not be considering, but if it is true, if it is true, a move like this is concerning,” she told reporters. “We believe in the freedom of the press. It is critical. It is critically important, and the United States supports the critically important work journalists around the world do.”
“That includes those who are reporting on the conflict in Gaza,” Jean-Pierre added. “We believe that work is important. The freedom of the press is important, and if those reports are true, it is concerning to us.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly claimed that he would “act immediately” to block Al Jazeera, which he described as a “terrorist channel,” from broadcasting inside Israel after the law was passed.
