“Squad” member and first-term Rep. Summer Lee (D-PA) has become the target of Moderate PAC for her track record of not working with the president.
Moderate PAC, which was created to protect and put centrists in office, is launching a $150,000 ad this week in the Pittsburgh media market. Though the PAC purports to protect centrist lawmakers, Ty Strong, the PAC’s president, sounded the alarm that a Republican could win Lee’s seat in November.
“Biden and Democrats need to win Pennsylvania to prevent Donald Trump from becoming president,” Strong told Axios. “Summer Lee is part of the far-left ‘uncommitted’ movement, a movement that does not align with the voters of Pittsburgh.”
The group worries that Lee’s criticism of the president will damage President Joe Biden come Election Day.
In the advertisement, the narrator mentions that Lee and the “Squad” gave Biden the cold shoulder at the State of the Union address.
“Rep. Summer Lee is opposing President Biden. She and the ‘Squad’ gave him the cold shoulder at the State of the Union,” the narrator says. “We need a representative who will work with Biden.”
Lee also tweeted back in 2021 that the plan was to “dismantle” the Democratic Party.
Strong told the Intercept all of the money for the ads had been raised by Pittsburgh labor unions and members of the community.
Ahead of the congressional primary on April 23, Lee is being challenged by Bhavini Patel. She has received the endorsements of several mayors located in the district.
Other organizations and PACs have worked to unseat Lee and her fellow “Squad” members. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee plans to drop $100 million to oppose progressives who fail to show support for Israel.

The Hamas-Israel war has become a central issue dividing the Democratic Party — driving a wedge between progressives and the president. Some voters have shown their disapproval of Biden’s handling of the war by choosing to cast “uncommitted” votes in primary contests.
The war has also been a point of discussion during a forum held last month in which Patel criticized Lee for accepting donations from Palestinian activists who have been criticized by the Anti-Defamation League for their anti-Jewish rhetoric.
