Republicans hold nearly a 1 million registration advantage over Democrats in Florida

Florida Democrats aimed to attract voters on the issue ⁤of ⁣abortion but face a hurdle as ‍registered Republicans in the state surpass Democrats by around 900,000. Governor Ron DeSantis highlighted the significant shift, pointing out the potential to achieve a million-voter Republican registration advantage. The political ⁤landscape in Hillsborough County, including Tampa, is on the brink of transitioning from Democrat to Republican, reflecting a broader trend in the Tampa Bay market.

Despite Florida Democrats’ hopes to win over voters on abortion, the state’s registered Republican voters now outpace Democrats by nearly 900,000.

“Prior to 2021, FL never had more registered Republicans than Democrats,” Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) said on Twitter. “Now, a million voter R registration advantage is within reach. Hillsborough (Tampa) is about to flip from D to R, which will mean every county in the Tampa Bay market has an R advantage in this previously “swing” region of the state.”

For the first time in history, Republican voter registration in Florida surpassed Democrats in 2021. Nearly 444,500 people moved to the Sunshine State from July 2021 to July 2022, marking it as the largest year-over-year impact of residents moving.

By March 2022, Republicans outpaced Democrats by more than 100,000, with the number doubling by that July, and reaching 350,000 by December of that year. By October 2023, Republicans’ advantage grew to 680,030. According to the Republican National Committee, registration in 2023 nearly doubled for Republicans. As of Thursday, registered Republicans lead Democrats by 889,569 voters.

On the other side, since March, Democrats have lost 1,000 voters. Republicans outnumber Democrats in 56 of the state’s 67 counties.

“In 2020, Trump won Florida by 3.3% when Democrats led by over 100,000 registered voters,” Republican Party of Florida Chairman Evan Power said in a statement to Breitbart News. “In 2024, Republicans lead Dems by over 854,318 votes. Imagine what that will deliver in November! … Florida Democrats are toast, but we won’t let our confidence keep us from working hard to deliver Florida’s electoral votes to President Trump,” he continued.

Meanwhile, Democrats are holding out hope that the state’s new abortion ban will attract younger, left-leaning voters. Biden campaign manager Julie Chávez Rodríguez declared in a memo that Florida was now “winnable.” Trump won the state by 370,000 votes in 2020.
