USA Today alters headline about Trump’s abortion stance following Biden campaign’s complaint during press call: Report

USA Today appeared to cave to pressure from Team Biden after the campaign called out the news outlet during a Monday press call for publishing what it viewed as a “particularly egregiously false” headline on former President Donald Trump’s abortion statement.

After Trump released a video statement Monday morning saying he wants states to have the final say on abortion laws, USA Today published an article with the headline: “‘The will of the people’: Trump opposes national abortion ban; says states should decide.” An archived version of the article captured by Mediaite shows that later on Monday, USA Today changed the headline to “Donald Trump says states should decide abortion policy, avoids talk of a national ban,” with no editor’s note explaining the major revision.

Mediaite reported that the change came just two hours after the Biden campaign blasted USA Today over the headline. The press call included Biden Campaign Manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez, Deputy Communications Director Brooke Goren, and pro-abortion advocate Kaitlyn Kash.

“One particularly egregiously false headline even said Trump, quote, ‘opposes a national abortion ban and will leave it up to the will of the people,’” one Biden-Harris staffer said.

USA Today told Fox News in a statement, “Our mission is to report the facts as accurately as possible. As part of our routine editorial process with breaking news, headline updates are not uncommon. In this instance, the headline was updated to more precisely reflect the story,”

In his Monday statement, Trump said he “proudly” takes responsibility for the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022, which opened the door for states to limit or completely ban abortion. He added that he is “strongly in favor of” exceptions for rape, incest, and the life of the mother.

“At the end of the day, this is about the will of the people,” Trump said, adding later, “You must follow your heart on this issue, but remember: you must also win elections to restore our culture and, in fact, to save our country.”

Immediately following Trump’s statement, President Joe Biden said Trump would still sign federal abortion limitations if he is back in the White House.

“Let there be no illusion. If Donald Trump is elected and the MAGA Republicans in Congress put a national abortion ban on the Resolute Desk, Trump will sign it into law,” Biden said.

Democrats and the Biden campaign are pushing to make abortion a main issue for the 2024 election, seeking to ride their recent electoral success in states where abortion was on the ballot. After the Arizona Supreme Court upheld an 1864 law protecting unborn babies from abortion in nearly every case on Tuesday, the Left wasted no time slamming “extreme abortion laws” that are “now enforceable because Trump ended Roe.”

Democrats in numerous battleground states, including Michigan, Wisconsin, and now Arizona, are focusing on their pro-abortion policies to motivate voters to come out for Biden in November.
