House Speaker Mike Johnson argued that “open border Democrats” are dragging their feet on securing the border, stating that House Republicans have provided legislation that would secure it.

Johnson made his claim amid growing criticism over his leadership, specifically for how House Republicans have not yet provided increased border security along the southern border. The House speaker contended that he and his fellow Republicans have passed bills to help secure the border, but that they are currently awaiting a vote in the Senate, which the Democratic Party currently controls.

“See, the open border Democrats control the Senate and the White House, obviously,” Johnson said on Fox News’s Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo. “So we’ve not been able to have a law-making exercise to meet that critical objective. But we’re fighting every day. That’s why we’ve been demanding that President Biden use his executive authority to seal that border.”

When asked if there was any path that House Republicans could take to secure the border while under the leadership of President Joe Biden, Johnson argued that the president has “seven or eight different options” he could take.

Johnson also revealed that former President Donald Trump is “100% with me,” when detailing a discussion he had with the former president over the weekend. It comes as Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has filed a motion to vacate Johnson for not securing the border while leading the House.

“What Marjorie’s done with the motion to vacate is not helpful for our party, for our mission to save the country, because if we don’t grow the House majority, keep the House majority, win the Senate, and win back the White House for President Trump, we’re going to lose the republic,” Johnson said.

Greene is far from the only Republican expressing criticism of Johnson’s leadership, as Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) criticized Johnson on Sunday for voting against an amendment to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. He also noted that for the time being, Johnson has not led in a way that was any different from when the Democrats held the House.
