Hillary Clinton condemned Arizona’s state Supreme Court ruling that will soon put into place a near-total abortion ban.

Last week, the court upheld an 1864 Civil War-era law that nearly bans all abortions and only makes exceptions in cases in which the pregnant mother faces immediate life-threatening conditions. The law also mandates a prison sentence of between two and five years for a healthcare provider performing the procedure unlawfully.

While appearing on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Clinton called the ruling “horrifying in every way.”

“I feared it would happen, but I hoped it wouldn’t happen. And now here we are in the … middle of this very difficult period for women in about half the states of our country who cannot get the care that they need,” Clinton said. “The old law in Arizona is … without exceptions.”

“You know the danger to women’s lives, as well to our right to make our own decisions about our bodies and ourselves, is so profound,” she continued. “And there’s another element to it, which I find so troubling. I mean, there is a kind of cruelty to it … no exceptions for rape, incest. I mean, really?”

Host Kelly Clarkson contended that taking away the option of abortion could kill women, to which Clinton agreed. Clarkson suggested that voter apathy is a contributing factor.

“I want to vote in a way that’s going to make life better for the maximum number of people and not be trying to impose your views on the rest of us,” Clinton replied. “So whatever you care about, voting is your superpower. And it may not seem like it, but it really is.”

Clinton added that she is currently helping to produce a musical, called Suffs, with the intention to help encourage people to vote.

She noted that the musical tells the story of how women obtained the right to vote.
