House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-TX) said during an interview over the weekend that it was important for Republicans to pass legislation to give additional military assistance to Ukraine because it would be even more catastrophic for the West than Biden’s disaster in Afghanistan.

McCaul made the remarks during a Sunday interview on ABC News’ “This Week” while talking about the legislation the House passed at the end of last week.

“The people in Israel, and in Ukraine, and in Taiwan, and our NATO allies now know that America’s back,” he said. “That we’re leading the free world like Ronald Reagan did and Reagan brought down the Soviet Union for God’s sakes. The eyes of the world are watching and our adversaries are watching, and history is watching. And that’s what I kept telling my colleagues, do you want to be a Chamberlain or a Churchill? Because that is the moment in time that we are at.”

“I grew up in the Cold War, and I see the whole thing differently,” he continued. “I think if we surrender on Ukraine like we did in Afghanistan, which was a debacle, is the United States of America going to be stronger or weaker? I would say weaker, and then Putin will invade Moldova — that’s not Article 5 — Georgia, he’ll threaten the Baltics. We can’t shrink from this responsibility.”

He said that if the allies had stopped Adolf Hitler after Nazi Germany invaded Poland that the world would have saved so “much blood and treasure.”

“I think we’re at the same moment in history now,” he added.
