Washington Free Beacon editor in chief Eliana Johnson appeared on NewsNation on Sunday with Chris Stirewalt, where she discussed whether former president Donald Trump’s criminal trial in New York will benefit his campaign in the court of public opinion.
“If Trump takes the stand … the defense’s key witness in this is Michael Cohen,” Johnson said, noting that the convicted felon and lawyer “is not exactly known for his trustworthiness, veracity, probity, good judgment.” Johnson also said the prosecution will have a hard time demonstrating Trump had a direct role in creating the business records he’s accused of falsifying, and that “Trump will be hardest hit in that he’s not out there campaigning.”
Trump is expected to testify in the trial. Opening statements are scheduled to begin Monday.
