Starbucks is debuting a new line of “sustainable cold cups” across the United States to tackle carbon emissions just in time for Earth Day on Monday.
After four years of experimenting in the Tryer Center, the 20,000-square-foot company’s lab of innovation in Seattle, Starbucks has studied how to have fewer plastics in cold cup designs by 20%.
The company is calling the new cups “sustainable” as a way to cut carbon, water, and waste footprints in half by 2030.
It predicts that the new cups will provide less waste in landfills by eliminating up to 13.5 million pounds of plastic each year, per a company press release.
While the cups will still hold the same amount of coffee, they are redesigned to have a wider mouth so there is the same size lid for all coffee drink sizes: tall, grande, and venti.

In 2022, Starbucks made other changes to cups, including moving away from paper cups and using strawless lids in 2020.
