Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) argued that comments made by Arizona GOP senatorial candidate Kari Lake could result in violence.

Last month, Lake told supporters during a rally in Arizona’s Mohave County that they need to be prepared for an “intense” run-up to the election, making reference to carrying a gun “just in case.”

“It’s dangerous,” Kelly told NBC’s Kristen Welker during an interview on Meet the Press. “What Kari Lake said could result in people getting hurt or killed.”

Lake told supporters: “And we need to strap on our — let’s see. What do we want to strap on? We’re going to strap on … our seat belt. We’re going to put on our helmet or your ‘Kari Lake’ ball cap. We are going to put on the armor of God. And maybe strap on a Glock on the side of us just in case,” she said.

Lake, who lost the 2022 gubernatorial race, is going up against Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ), and both are vying to replace outgoing independent Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, who opted not to seek another term.

This Arizona senatorial race is considered to be one of the most pivotal in this election cycle.
There are 34 Senate seats up for grabs in the 2024 election cycle, and of those, Democrats must defend 23, compared to just 11 for Republicans. Democrats currently have a one-seat majority in the Senate.
