House Republicans propose awarding Trump Congressional Gold Medal
A group of House Republicans is advocating for former President Donald Trump to receive the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian honor bestowed by the Legislative Branch. Fox News obtained a draft resolution praising Trump for his exceptional leadership and diplomatic efforts during his presidency. Led by Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, the initiative has received support from several Republicans.
A group of House Republicans have banded together in trying to get former President Donald Trump a Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian award the Legislative Branch can bestow.
Fox News obtained a draft of a resolution that seeks to recognize Trump for “his exceptional leadership and dedication to strengthening America’s diplomatic relations during his presidency.”
The long-shot effort is spearheaded by Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-LA) and has the support of at least six other Republicans, including House GOP Chief Deputy Whip Guy Reschenthaler (R-PA).
“Despite the liberal media’s attempts to spread fear, America and the world were undoubtedly safer under President Donald Trump,” Luna told the news outlet.
“One of our duties in Congress is to honor those who have contributed significantly to our nation, and that’s why I’m introducing this legislation,” she added.
Former presidents are counted among the recipients of gold medals from Congress, including George Washington, Ulysses S. Grant, Harry Truman, Gerald Ford, and Ronald Reagan.
However, given the political climate and the fact that Republicans narrowly control the House and Democrats lead the Senate, Trump will not likely end up winning the award in the near future.
Still, as Trump seeks another term in the White House, his GOP supporters in Congress have introduced different measures geared toward honoring the former president.

Reschenthaler, for instance, led a House Republican effort last month to rename Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia as the Donald J. Trump International Airport.
As he campaigns, Trump is also trying to fight off criminal cases on the federal and state levels in which he claims prosecutors are engaged in a politically motivated “witch hunt” against him.
During an ongoing hush-money trial in New York City, congressional Republicans and others have shown up with Trump to show their support of the presumptive GOP presidential nominee.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) appeared at the Manhattan courthouse on Tuesday where he said it is “painfully obvious” that Trump is being unfairly targeted by Democrats.
President Joe Biden is also running for a second term, paving the way to a 2020 rematch with some new factors this time, such as independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in the mix.
