Trump’s team hurriedly clarifies candidate’s sharing of video with ‘unified Reich’ headline

The campaign to elect former President Donald Trump is scrambling trying to explain why Trump shared a video with the phrase “unified Reich,” which refers to Nazi Germany.

During the video, a narrator described “what happens after Donald Trump wins,” and the screen flashed to a newspaper headline reading, “Industrial strength significantly increased … driven by the creation of a unified Reich.” The term “reich” refers to an empire, but the word was also used by Adolf Hitler’s “Third Reich,” another name for his Nazi regime.

The Trump campaign said one of its staffers posted the video to Truth Social without seeing the phrase.

“This was not a campaign video, it was created by a random account online and reposted by a staffer who clearly did not see the word, while the President was in court,” Karoline Leavitt, a campaign spokeswoman, said in a statement.

The Biden campaign said some of the headlines displayed in the video echoed Nazi Germany.

“Donald Trump is not playing games; he is telling America exactly what he intends to do if he regains power: rule as a dictator over a ‘unified reich,’” Biden spokesman James Singer said.

Another headline suggested Trump would reject “globalists,” a term that has been adopted on the hard Right and is widely viewed in connection to antisemitism.

In recent months, Trump has tried to court the Jewish American vote, but some of his statements have been condemned as antisemitic.

“Any Jewish person that votes for Democrats hates their religion,” Trump said. “They hate everything about Israel, and they should be ashamed of themselves because Israel will be destroyed.”

“That escalation of rhetoric is so dangerous, so divisive, and so wrong,” said Rabbi Richard Jacobs, president of the Union for Reform Judaism, the largest U.S. Jewish religious denomination. “This is a moment when Israel needs there to be more bipartisan support.”
