House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) called on the Supreme Court to step in after former President Donald Trump was found guilty of 34 counts of falsifying business records, a verdict he called “absurd” and “dangerous.”
“I do believe the Supreme Court should step in, obviously, this is totally unprecedented, and it’s dangerous to our system,” Johnson told Fox News’s Fox and Friends.
“We’ve all discussed this before, and y’all talk about it all the time — this is diminishing the American people’s faith in our system of justice itself,” the speaker added.
To preserve a republic, citizens must believe that they live in a society where equal justice is protected under the law, said Johnson, a constitutional lawyer and former litigator.
“They don’t see that right now, and I think that the justices on the court, I know many of them personally, I think they’re deeply concerned about that, as we are,” he said.
“I think they’ll set this straight, but it’s going to take a while,” Johnson said. “… The process takes a while to play out.”
Democrats are fully aware of how long this process could drag out and desire to continue what many perceive as an attack on their political opposition as long as possible, according to the speaker.
“They want to bankrupt Donald Trump,” he said. “They want to diminish his credibility and go after his character. They wanted to keep him off the campaign trail, which they were successful in doing for many weeks, and now they want to call him the convicted felon.”

Despite these relentless attacks, the verdict against Trump will be overturned, according to Johnson.
“There’s no question about it,” he said. “It’s just going to take some time to do it.”
