President Joe Biden is in Normandy, France, on Thursday to take part in the 80th anniversary commemoration of the D-Day landings during World War II.

First lady Jill Biden will join the president, who plans to meet with American veterans and their family members “to honor their sacrifice,” according to the White House.

Joe Biden is expected to speak at the commemoration ceremony and, while doing so, express his commitment to the United States’s European allies and share his efforts in upholding democracy.

The president landed in France on Wednesday and is expected to spend five days there. The commemoration on Thursday is expected to begin around 6:30 a.m. Eastern time.

D-Day marked the biggest turning point for the Allied forces in World War II, allowing them to grab a foothold on the western front of Europe and begin the end of the Nazi control of Germany and much of the continent.
